Yo, Philly in the News

  • And speaking of last night's game, check out this "Dewey Defeats Truman"-esque headline that was posted on MLB.com before last night's game was even over. FAIL. (Via Preston & Steve.)
  • Extra, Extra

  • We feel bad for many—but not all—shooting victims. Amongst the ones we don't have any pity for are guys who manage to get themselves shot while committing a home invasion.
  • Nearly 2000 employees at DuPont's South Philly lab are being laid off.
  • More than 200 Philadelphia School District staffers, all academic coaches, were laid off this week in a move intended to decentralize the district and move resources into classrooms.
  • All across the Ist-A-Verse (or at least the American parts thereof), writers and editors are in the midst of enjoying their three-day weekend. But after the week we've all had, we feel like the break is not only needed, but deserved. Just look at everything we've been doing!

  • Two police raids this past Friday and Saturday turned up a bunch of drugs (including especially large amounts of cocaine), guns, and wads of cash.
  • Did the Feds steal money from the family of a late Center City jeweler? That's what the family is claiming.
  • Sunday night a New Jersey state trooper spotted an SUV moving at a high rate of speed and swerving between lanes. The trooper finally got the guy to stop as he was crossing the Walt Whitman. The driver hopped out of the car - and flung himself off the bridge. A search has been conducted for the man, but as of this writing, it has been unsuccessful. Very strange stuff. Since when is facing a possible traffic ticket more frightening than jumping off a bridge??
  • If you missed the final debate in Philly Tuesday night between PA gubernatorial candidates Lynn Swann and Ed Rendell...well, it sounds like you didn't miss much. They basically just said all the same old stuff. We suspect Dan Savage's talk during a fundraiser for Philadelphians Against Santorum at the Troc - which happened that same night - was a lot more interesting.
  • Weird crime time: police responded to a 911 domestic dispute call in Rhawnhurst on Sunday; supposedly a man was assaulting a woman. Nothing too unusual about that. Except the weapon he was using was an iron, and when cops arrived he allegedly turned it on them. Three officers were injured (all treated and released), and the man was arrested. Hopefully they'll keep him away from the laundry room while in jail.
