We've all gotten cheap laughs out of cute, adorable kittens on the Internet, whether dressed in costume or pleading for nourishment, so it's about time we give back to the feline community. Leading the charge is City Kitties Rescue, a small group of pro-active volunteers who rescue stray cats and kittens in Philadelphia, foster them back to good health, and adopt them out to new homes. Tonight head over to Studio 34 in West Philadelphia for a silent auction and fund raiser in support of both City Kitties and Project SAFE, an organization helping to promote human rights-based public health for women working in prostitution in Philadelphia. Drawings, prints, photography, paintings, sculpture, and metalwork will be available at varying starting bids. Showcasing over 25 established and emerging artists, the auction will feature the works of Kyle Cassidy , Tim McFarlane, and Sibylla Benatova, among others. In addition to the silent auction, there will be live music, raffle drawings, a photo booth, a button-making station, an interactive work of art collaboration, and the usual hors d'oeuvres, beer and wine. A steaming hot pile of our favorite things from around the internets.
Well, we were going to tell you about Dracula's Ball, the regular Goth event that happens to occur on Hallowe'en every year (what a coincidence!), but then we had a bright idea: Why do all the work when we can have someone else tell you all about it? So we traded some emails with promoter Patrick Rodgers of Dancing Ferret, and he graciously agreed to answer some spoooooky questions.
If any of you faithful readers have spent any time at all in West Philly, you'll know that the neighborhood is just lousy with stray cats. There's a self-sustaining breeding population of ferals out there, and the fact that pet owners in the area seem to be frequently losing or "freeing" cats just makes things worse. Between malnutrition, neighborhood hooligans, rampant disease and dog-fight training, it's a rough place out there for homeless kitties. Lou and Lori, the catloving masterminds behind City Kitties, have been fostering and placing cats in need of rescue for the last year. In June they decided that if they were going to do that sort of thing, they might as well try to get some support and organization. The result: City Kitties, a West Philly cat rescue. If you visit the site, you'll find cats in need of a home, neighborhood stray classifieds, information on becoming a cat fosterer, and the City Kitties store, where you can buy little buttons and magnets to support the cause. In addition to generic cat buttons, City Kitties will also do custom illustrated buttons of your favourite cat or neighborhood stray, like 46th St. celebrities Scrunch the Cat (adopted), Mr. Hugs (adopted) or 1Ear (still out there). City Kitties is currently working to get official non-profit status, but they don't have it yet. Still, right now they're accepting donations of cold hard cash as well as cat care supplies. Most especially, though, they're looking for neighborhood folks who are willing to foster animals until permanent homes can be found for them. It's a very good cause, and civic-minded or animal-loving Phillyist readers should check out the website and make a contribution. Lori and Lou are nice people, and they do good work.
