Phillyist believes the Philadelphia Orchestra to be one of the great institutions in this city, and one of the great musical institutions in the world of classical music. Starting this month, Phillyist will be writing about a specific concert series of the Philadelphia Orchestra, highlighting special works or composers that have ties to the Philadelphia area, the new "Beyond the Score" series, classics that you simply cannot miss and family concerts that feature performances geared toward children.
We focus on moms a lot in this column. Classes, events, support, its all for mommies, and with good reason. Carrying around a watermelon inside of your body for those last two months of pregnancy is hard work and we deserve a little extra love, especially from Philadelphia-based blogs. However, Father's Day IS coming up, and Phillyist thought it might be time for us to spotlight some stuff for dads. So here it is, tons of stuff to do for Father's Day, all for the price of a horrible tie and weird looking mug your dad will say loves and then "take to the office" where it will never be heard from again.
Fun around town, for $10 or less:
This view looks an awful lot like the one from this Phillyist's old apartment building. It was the only good thing about the place.
Performances:The Don and Julie Show!!! (Don Montrey and Juliette Pryor) (no future performances); Wandering Alice (Nichole Canuso Dance Company) (no future performances); Urban ECHO: Circle Told (Leah Stein Dance Company + Mendelssohn Club of Philadelphia) (no future performances); The show must go on (Jérôme Bel) (no future performances)
On Saturday evening, Ross and I went to see our last Live Arts show of this year's festival, Jérôme Bel's The show must go on, which was presented at the Kimmel Center. My review of that show is forthcoming, but for the purposes of this column, now, suffice it to say that it's one of those shows that you either "get" or you don't. And while most of Saturday night's audience was willing to go along for the ride, there were a couple of assholes in the audience who seemed hell-bent on making everyone as miserable as they were.
Fun around town, for $10 or less:
Never wear a short-sleeve button-down shirt and a $300 tie at the same time. You just look like a wealthy classless fool!
Ever thought you would spend the night at the Kimmel Center? Take part in an event, which under normal circumstances, would never happen. It’s the annual all-day, all-night celebration known as the Kimmel Center's Summer Solstice Celebration, commemorating the longest day of the year. Featuring games, music (classical, jazz, and pop), dance performances, and even a drag show, it begins at 3 pm on Saturday and runs until dawn on Sunday. It’s $10 for adults, and $5 for children 12 and under.
Fortune cookie: Friday brings hope.
We didn't make it to Can't Miss This! yesterday, but it's not because we don't love you. We were testing you. Did you notice we weren't here with our daily trio of evening derrings-do? We hope so.
It just may be that this particular Phillyist is going to the sold out Jimmy Eat World show in Atlantic City tonight. And it just may be that you aren't.
