Phillyist Playlist: Philadelphia Orchestra 2009/10 season

Phillyist believes the Philadelphia Orchestra to be one of the great institutions in this city, and one of the great musical institutions in the world of classical music. Starting this month, Phillyist will be writing about a specific concert series of the Philadelphia Orchestra, highlighting special works or composers that have ties to the Philadelphia area, the new "Beyond the Score" series, classics that you simply cannot miss and family concerts that feature performances geared toward children.

I've Got A Baby and Ten Dollars... Now What?

We focus on moms a lot in this column. Classes, events, support, its all for mommies, and with good reason. Carrying around a watermelon inside of your body for those last two months of pregnancy is hard work and we deserve a little extra love, especially from Philadelphia-based blogs. However, Father's Day IS coming up, and Phillyist thought it might be time for us to spotlight some stuff for dads. So here it is, tons of stuff to do for Father's Day, all for the price of a horrible tie and weird looking mug your dad will say loves and then "take to the office" where it will never be heard from again.

  • Thomas McFarland, Jr., the Main Line dentist accused of dumping needles and other medical waste into the ocean near Avalon last August was indicted yesterday on charges of pollution. As a result of the pollution in August, Avalon was forced to close its beaches for four days raising concern among beachgoers and local officials. If he is convicted he could face 10 years in prison and up to $125,000 in fines.

  • Democrats now outnumber Republicans in Pennsylvania by almost 1.2 million. Meanwhile, the Obama campaign has received threats at several of its Pennsylvania offices and is asking labor unions to help provide volunteer security at 27 of the offices between now and Election Day, including six in Philadelphia.
  • This view looks an awful lot like the one from this Phillyist's old apartment building. It was the only good thing about the place.

Performances:The Don and Julie Show!!! (Don Montrey and Juliette Pryor) (no future performances); Wandering Alice (Nichole Canuso Dance Company) (no future performances); Urban ECHO: Circle Told (Leah Stein Dance Company + Mendelssohn Club of Philadelphia) (no future performances); The show must go on (Jérôme Bel) (no future performances)

On Saturday evening, Ross and I went to see our last Live Arts show of this year's festival, Jérôme Bel's The show must go on, which was presented at the Kimmel Center. My review of that show is forthcoming, but for the purposes of this column, now, suffice it to say that it's one of those shows that you either "get" or you don't. And while most of Saturday night's audience was willing to go along for the ride, there were a couple of assholes in the audience who seemed hell-bent on making everyone as miserable as they were.

  • Due to the recent loss of $1.4 million in federal funding, and accreditation problems, the Berean Institute, a North Philadelphia landmark that has provided vocational and business education to African-Americans for 109 years, could go out of business as early as Friday. The state is also evicting the school from the building it has occupied since 1973. Berean supporters are calling for a rally at the school at noon Thursday.
  • Never wear a short-sleeve button-down shirt and a $300 tie at the same time. You just look like a wealthy classless fool!

Ever thought you would spend the night at the Kimmel Center? Take part in an event, which under normal circumstances, would never happen. It’s the annual all-day, all-night celebration known as the Kimmel Center's Summer Solstice Celebration, commemorating the longest day of the year. Featuring games, music (classical, jazz, and pop), dance performances, and even a drag show, it begins at 3 pm on Saturday and runs until dawn on Sunday. It’s $10 for adults, and $5 for children 12 and under.

    Fortune cookie: Friday brings hope.

We didn't make it to Can't Miss This! yesterday, but it's not because we don't love you. We were testing you. Did you notice we weren't here with our daily trio of evening derrings-do? We hope so.

It just may be that this particular Phillyist is going to the sold out Jimmy Eat World show in Atlantic City tonight. And it just may be that you aren't.

  • Philadelphia traffic judge Willie F. Singletary, 28—who a year ago had his driver's license suspended through 2011 for owing $11,427 for 55 traffic violations—is now in trouble again. The state Judicial Conduct Board issued a complaint against him yesterday, charging him with five counts of misconduct for soliciting campaign donations from the Philadelphia First State Road Rattlers Motorcycle Club.
