Foodsday Tuesday:  Don't Pass on Pesach

Ah, Passover. That lovely time of year where God—via a series of biblical writings and ancient rules—tells you to go on Atkins. (Unless you eat lots and lots of Matzah—that stuff is pretty carb-heavy.)

Well, we definitely like the title of the event...

A few years ago, while I was an undergrad, an email went out to all of the Jewish students at Penn. (Whatever joke you're going to make there, don't. It's already been made.) The email informed us that an Orthodox Jewish reggae performer would be doing a special show at Penn. I chuckled at the gimmicky incongruity of the message and largely ignored it, probably opting instead to go to theatre rehearsal or a bar.

Yom Kippur begins tonight. So even though this video isn't set in Philadelphia, there are 75,000 Jews living here (this Phillyist included), and this video goes out to them on their holiest of Holy Days.

And who better to tell you about it than Philadelphia Biblical University's Institute of Jewish Studies? Note to PBU: Passover is a Jewish Holiday. Isaiah is a book in the Old Testament. So starting at 1:14 into the video, what the hell is Jesus doing there?*

Yesterday's ran a rather long piece called "How Do You Prove You're a Jew?", and while it may seem an unconventional topic for a manners column, I'd like to expound a bit upon it. Have no fear: even if you don't have the time or the inclination to read the original Gershom Gorenberg essay, I'm only using it as a jumping-off point for this column, and I promise not to allude to anything that would only be understood if you did read it.
