It's not clear how much it will cost, but the Nutter administration is determined to get a 311 system installed in Philadelphia by the end of the year. If you're in an emergency, you'd still dial 911, but for any other city service, you could call 311. Officials also plan to implement PhillyStat, "a program that will track data from city departments and from 3-1-1 calls to assess how agencies are performing."
And how about some more bad news about money? "The downturn in Philadelphia's housing market - fewer homes changing hands, at lower prices - has created a growing hole in the city budget, likely to reach $10 million to $15 million by midyear."
The FBI is looking for a filthy dude in connection with the robbery yesterday of the Trumark Financial Credit Union at 1811 John F. Kennedy Blvd. He's a black man in his 30s "who was wearing sunglasses, a dirty gray suit jacket and dirty white sneakers." He got away with some cash - and a dye pack, which was later found exploded at a train concourse at 17th and JFK.
The 13-year-old Lansdowne boy who fatally stabbed his 16-year-old brother because he wanted a turn playing video games has been allowed by the judge to attend his brother's funeral, although he will be shackled and accompanied by deputy sheriffs.
Hey, want an office building? Eleven are on sale in Center City right now, including the entire city block made up of 10 Penn Center, 11 Penn Center and 1800/1880 John F. Kennedy Blvd. With this many buildings up for sale, it could be a record year in Philly for real estate transactions. Follow the link for an economic explanation for why this is happening; we tried reading it ourselves, but it made our head hurt. The point is, this is apparently a good thing; it means the real estate market is booming.
