Earlier, we mentioned that Mayor Nutter had a great quote about all the Phillies celebrations going on: "You can be joyous. You cannot be a jackass." We were at the parade earlier this afternoon, and there certainly were a whole lot of joyous people around, and not a lot of jackasses. It was refreshing, particularly after the absolute shitshow that was Wedensday night.

First of all, this is NOT the Curse of Billy Penn rearing its ugly head. There may have never been such a thing to begin with. The Phillies still enjoy a 3-1 lead in the World Series and will still be at home when the Series resumes play (supposedly) on Wednesday.

Ah, what I wouldn't give to be the average George Bush supporter at this very moment in time. If I could, then I could delusionally ignore what I have just seen and pretend like everything is all right with "the home team." Yes, the Eagles just thoroughly dominated the overmatched Jets! Yes, there are WMDs hidden behind one of the flat-screen TVs in Saddam Hussein's palatial domain that just haven't been found yet! Yes, voting an actor from Law & Order to the highest position of responsibility in the world would go a long way toward restoring our luster in the eyes of the world. But, no, I am a realist, and as a realist I know two things: 1) Bush should have been impeached three years ago and 2) The Eagles are about as "out of the woods" as the Unabomber was out of the woods. Rejoice in this victory if you must but realize that if this is as good as it gets, you might actually have to start giving a rat's ass about the Flyers before long. On to the diary!

Just as fans were coming to terms with the Phils missing the playoffs, they switched to Fox and saw that their next big hope, the Philadelphia Eagles, were quickly on their way to a mediocre 2 - 2 start to their season. The Eagles, who followed up a tough opening night loss to Atlanta with two wins over the San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders, went down quickly to the Kansas City Chiefs, who pounced on them early and built up a 17 - 0 lead. A Sheldon Brown interception return for a touchdown sparked the team, but a missed extra point and a kickoff return by Chiefs return man Dante Hall for a touchdown quickly deflated them.
