Phillyist notes a fistfight between local pols that leaves one man down for the count. Jehovah's Witnesses get a Philly contributor out of bed, things get a little geeky with a film festival and geeky gets taken to a whole new galaxy when they talk with the Dragon Queen of the Dark Kingdom.
We're not sure how long they're going to be there, but as of 8:25 this morning some folks were handing out free samples of Quaker Breakfast Cookies, plus a coupon, in the area of 11th and Arch. Our mother told us not to take cookies from strangers, but these people seemed pretty trustworthy, and anyway...free cookies! We can't say they're the best cookies we've ever eaten, but after all, we didn't pay anything for them, so what the hell! (Also, it's been a little while and we're not dead yet, so they're probably not poisoned.) Hurry and get your cookies, too!
Dear Phillyist Readers:
Nothing can melt Phillyist's cold, sarcastic, postmodern blogger facade faster than a holiday model train set. There's just something about that perfect little dream world with the tiny, wonderful machines running through it that makes us all warm and nostalgic, and brings back the goofy, grinning kid in us. That's why we were excited as a little tyke on Christmas morn to find the Reading Terminal Holiday Railroad Display back again this year. If you saw last year's display (pictured above), you still need to come by and see this one, because it's completely different. This time there are two waterfalls, a tunnel, an elevated trolley, and ever so much other fun stuff!
How'd the first day of the SEPTA strike go? Well, it depends on who you talk to.
Phillyist witnessed a regular indie rock lovefest at the Electric Factory Tuesday night when we stopped in to check out Death Cab for Cutie, who are touring behind their latest disc, Plans. Canadian rockers Stars opened up by playing some mellow, melodic pop, and by gushing about Death Cab. They expressed their esteem multiple times, and even dedicated a song or two to the headliners. Another indie band, Broken Social Scene, was present, apparently still hanging around in Philly after their tour date the night before at the TLA, and their guitarist sat in for a few songs with Stars. Which meant, of course, that Broken Social Scene also had to be thanked profusely and sent much love.
Editor's note: Jim Genzano attended the first night of Exhumed Film's terrifying triple features series. It resumes this Saturday night at 8 p.m.

The Philadelphia Eagles begin their 2005 campaign to Super Bowl XL tonight in Atlanta. The game is a rematch of last season's NFC Championship game, which the Eagles won over the Falcons in order to get to Super Bowl XXXIX.
