2007 was without a doubt a year of challenge for hip-hop. Reports of its demise were on the tip of just about everybody's tongue. Crunk had come and gone, Jay-Z was in retirement, those that came up in the mid-nineties hip-hop hey day rewinding big verses over and over didn't listen to the radio anymore. The dirty party rhymes of the past now nothing but misogynistic trash; yesterday's raw statements on American life in the ghetto became needlessly violent, potentially dangerous minstrel music. After being hailed as the American culture movement of a generation, the bling had lost its luster.
Every weekday of December (except for December 25, that is), Phillyist will be counting down to 2008 with our highlights from the past year and our predictions for the next. If you have a list you'd like to submit, let us know! 10. Cross – Justice While this debut album by French duo Gaspard Auge and Xavier de Rosnay leans heavily on the discography of fellow Parisians, Daft Punk, it breaks out on its own...
Let's look back at a week in which no site in the -ist network adopted anyone from Africa...
You know who's going to be upset about those Bikini Bandits? The Houston school system. Houstonist also reports on some redevelopment shenanigans over a landmark theater.
AOL, a Live 8 partner, has announced a broadcast lineup for its online coverage of Live 8. Considering how chaotic Live 8 planning has been, this could be flipped and reversed and scrapped entirely by Saturday morning, but it gives us a first glimpse at how Saturday might go down. You know, aside from the predictions of large riots. And no, that's not a Kaiser Chiefs joke, but it works out as one in retrospect, doesn't it?

homeless destination, now we have to deal with Keith Urban and Jay-Z fans urinating against the Please Touch Museum and into the Logan Circle fountain? Not to worry, though -- beloved mayor, John Street, has made this pledge to Philly residents: "The Live 8 concert will happen on July 2, and at 8 a.m. on July 3, I
will be on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and it will be clean. Do you
hear me? It will be clean." Mayor Street may be standing amongst the rubble of what used to be the main branch of the Philadelphia Library, but hey, it'll be clean! Considering only 400,000 people [max] can fit between the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Love Park, we're not sure where one million people are going to congregate. Or relieve their bladders. Good news for those living in Center City and the Art Museum area. On a positive note -- if there's looting, I think we can all count on the Franklin Institute's giant heart being passed around the crowd like a giant beach ball. Who wouldn't want to see that? Then again, perhaps Live 8 will come off without a hitch, 300 port-a-potties will be plenty, and a good time will be had by all. We'll keep our fingers crossed.
