So just what is it that makes Thai food special? Most likely it is the combination in each dish of the four basic flavors -- sweet, sour, salty and spicy. Over the centuries, Thai cooking has borrowed freely from the culinary arts of China, India and Malaysia, blending these different influences to create something that is truly unique. While Thai food has a reputation for being spicy, in reality most dishes are not. The spiciness varies by region, and central Thai cuisine, the most commonly encountered variety, is probably the least spicy of all.

Our new author Lou is jumping right into the fray with a quick news post on the Penn shooting (gosh, we sure are Penn-centric!) that anonymous tipsters have been dumping links about into our contribute section - thanks for the heads-up, folks! We might give Lou more of a proper intro later, but for now we'll let his writing speak for him.

The novella caught my eye because it was slim and guaranteed to be well-written; a promise somehow implicit in the surname “Mann”. And it is a charming thing to read: charming when you consider that the level of Indian legend you’re exposing yourself to is ultra-filtered from the sensibilities of a German, and then again through the translation of an American (H.T. Lowe-Porter. And because it is a piece of Indian cultural currency being passed onto us by a German, much more effort is put into successfully communicating exoticism.

This week’s classical music events seem to cluster during the weekend, but no matter. There’s plenty to see and hear with the Opera Company of Philadelphia’s La bohème and an assortment of chamber music concerts.
