Every weekday of December (except for December 25, that is), Phillyist will be counting down to 2008 with our highlights from the past year and our predictions for the next. If you have a list you'd like to submit, let us know! In honor of kicking off our new sex column (write in!), I wanted to share my top 10 songs for your La Perla pleasure. A quick glance at this list might make you......

With so many amazing concerts in such a short period of time, it's inevitable that you'll run into a few doozies. Unfortunately for me, that doozy was Sunday night at North Star Bar. Earlier in the summer, I saw the band MAE open for Ok Go and The Fray at the Tweeter Center. Their six-song set was fun and enjoyable, but not completely engaging. I faulted the venue, crowd, and the fact that MAE had......

On of our favorite shows this summer was the MAE/Ok Go/The Fray concert at the Tweeter Center. Imagine 25,000 screaming fans, perfect weather and awesome seats. It was incredible. Though we are a huge fan of intimate settings and up-and-coming bands, we enjoyed the huge crowd, music and overall feel of the outdoor concert. It really was the perfect way to start the summer. Now, we are fortunate to end our summer with an intimate,......

Although I was at Johnny Brenda's on Friday specifically to review The Comas, I really went because they were co-headlining with The Broken West, who I've been big on since I first heard "Brass Ring," their first single off of I Can't Go On, I'll Go On. Opening for them was Nethers, whom Pencopal had told me, prior to the concert, that she loves. Unfortunately, either we have more disparate tastes in music than......

We've loved The Broken West since we first heard their debut album, I Can't Go On, I'll Go On a few months ago. So imagine our delight when we discovered that they'd be at Johnny Brenda's tonight. And that they wouldn't be alone, but that they'd actually be with the rather kick-ass band The Comas, who we've only just gotten into but we've discovered we totally dig. The Broken West has an almost Beach Boys......

By his own admission, Michael Penn isn’t a song-and-dance man. (His stage presence is, one might say, subdued.) Twiddling his strings at his Friday night show at World Café, he confessed “I’m a chronic tuner with no gift of gab,” and encouraged showgoers to grab the audience mic between song breaks to offer up “a really good joke, a fun fact, even a well placed heckle!” The crowd didn’t really comply, but no matter. Here......

This week's quote made us giggle a bit. It's from Roland Barthes: "For the theatre one needs long arms; it is better to have them too long than too short. An artiste with short arms can never, never make a fine gesture." Now, on with the listings! (And sorry about the lack o' listings last week.) Murderers - We always knew that old people were mean... October 6-November 5. Tickets available online. Comic Energy......

If Wolfmother is the triumphant, vibrant rebirth of '70s heavy metal (and they certainly are, may the Gods of metal bless 'em; by all means pick up their new self-titled full-length, which is fantastic), then The Clientele are the triumphant, vibrant rebirth of '60s Brit-pop, served with a large side of thoughtful sadness to make it bittersweet. And happily, they're invading Philly tonight (the First Unitarian Church, to be exact) along with Great Lakes and......
