What's new and/or interesting in theaters this weekend. For the Bible Tells Me So - This is a documentary looking at Christianity and homosexuality, and whether the two can possibly get along. It includes interviews with people on both sides of the debate, and looks at whether the parts of the Bible that are supposedly anti-gay haven't perhaps been taken out of context and used to serve a political agenda. Sounds like a very interesting......

Sometimes, it's hard to resist the hate. You may not be having an especially bad day – you may in fact be in a good mood. But sometimes the snark comes so naturally that you have to marinate in it. Like it's Lawry's. Today is one of those days for two Phillyists who found themselves in an e-mail conversation about Tori Amos, lactating, and people we'd like to have killed. This may be in poor......

A Pennsylvania man named Michael Curtis Reynolds took the stand in his defense yesterday in a case where he is charged with "using the Internet to help al-Qaeda attempt to blow up portions of the U.S. gas and oil infrastructure." He claims that he was actually just trying to lure out al-Qaeda operators so they could be captured. The SugarHouse casino is trying to smooth its way into Fishtown by throwing cash around - for......

The Philadelphia Inquirer has some more details about the madness that went down at West Philly High on Monday, as well as fall-out over the removal of the school's principal last week. Meanwhile, West Philly High isn't the only Philadelphia school experiencing violence and insanity; the Abigail Vare Public School on Moyamensing Avenue and Morris Street in South Philly went into lockdown Monday afternoon after a shooting occurred at a basketball court across the street.......

A tall, icy glass of our favorite internet junk, just for you. We've gotta say, we get a bit of a kick out of throwing snowballs at NBC10's rather annoying, be-bow-tied weatherman, "Hurricane" Schwartz, even if the game is on NBC's own site, and is therefore rather tame. Thanks much to the anonymous contributor who gave us the heads-up on this link! A detailed comparative analysis of '80s teen time travel comedies Back to the......

Cars of all kinds have taken over the Pennsylvania Convention Center this week for the Philadelphia International Auto Show, which runs through February 11. It's an auto bonanza with plenty of current cars on the floor, plus a few concept cars, antiques and tricked out autos. As someone who's attended the auto show every year since she was 10, it's hard to say how much is new about the show's concept, which is a......

First off, Phillyist would like to issue a heartfelt apology to our generous hosts at this weekend's Philadelphia Songwriter's Association Fifth Anniversary celebration. Due to technical difficulties on our end, we were unable to post anything about this event until today, and we appreciate their patience in waiting for us to sort things out. Last Saturday, at Milkboy Coffee in Ardmore, the Philadelphia Songwriter's Association hosted a concert featuring local artists Christine Havrilla and......

What's new and/or interesting in Philly theaters this weekend. Miss Potter - A film dramatization of the life of children's author Beatrix Potter. Renee Zellweger plays the title character, Ewan McGregor plays her publisher (and forbidden lover!), and Emily Watson plays her friend and his sister. The trailer makes it look like a terribly sweet little movie, and apparently some of Potter's paintings are animated in order to simulate her imaginary world; we can't decide......

As much as my job makes me question the state of humanity, it does good things for me. I am capable of paying my rent, I have running water and heat in my apartment, I eat on a regular basis, and I (finally) have health benefits. Without my job, I would not have these things. Sometimes, though, I forget to be thankful. New Year's Day was one such time. As I dragged my exhausted......

This week's collection of links provides some of the best, worst, and oddest bits of summer fun. So, bring your laptop up onto the roof, make yourself an umbrella drink or ten, and enjoy this week's choice posts from across the Gothamist network. Our weekly look into the odd, strange and bizarre at .org. Do you also walk around with a cardigan draped across your shoulders? Do you want to bring the cheese plate, or should I? This person really really really doesn’t like the flip flops for our oh SNAP! of the week. Some language NSFW. Discussion of the week: perogies. Um, no, I never feel like Barbie. Skipper sometimes. I don’t walk well in heels.......

We've got a couple of dog-related stories for you today. First of all, as you may have heard, an unlicensed kennel was shut down in Lower Oxford a while back and its owner and two workers pleaded guilty to animal cruelty charges. 333 purebred dogs were seized from the kennel, and this morning starting at 11AM about 85 of them (60 Cavalier King Charles spaniels and 25 papillons) go up for adoption at the Chester......

The shapeless dough of the internet, formed into tasty pellets and baked to perfection, just for you. Google has launched a site for searching US government websites. Is this revenge for the US government asking for their search records? (Via) Oh, and speaking of cool new Google stuff, dude, did you know you can Google the complete plays of Shakespeare now?! What's interesting on TV this week. 2006 ALMA Awards (Mon; 9:30PM-11PM; ABC) - The American Latino Media Arts Awards. Eva Longoria hosts, and also receives the person of the year award! Sounds like a bit of a conflict of interest to us. Gloria Estefan and Carmen Electra perform, amongst many others. Although what exactly Carmen Electra performs is a mystery. And a mighty intriguing mystery at that. Maybe she'll do one of her pole-dancing workout......

We try, we try hard, but sometimes, we just can't come up with a headline. And so we'll save the commentary for later and just leave you with the other -ists. by Jen A. Miller Marc Broussard is a young man with a deep voice, and he's bringing it to the TLA on Friday, December 2. Broussard (http://www.islandrecords.com/marcbroussard/site/home.las), who calls himself a "white boy singing soul music," brings a mix of influences to his music, from Stevie Wonder to Johnny Allen, and it shows. He's a Louisiana boy, and to help out his fellow southerners impacted by hurricanes Katrina and Rita, put out Bootleg to Benefit......

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah have been making enough Philadelphia appearances to prove that local product and lead singer Alec Ounsworth is correct when he says that they're not a New York band. (They're a sixth borough band, duh.) The band, whose self-titled debut is easily one of the year's best albums, will play another show tonight, this one at the TLA. The show is a benefit concert for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, with......

Today was supposed to be the grand opening of Miamist, the fourteenth website in the Gothamist network. Unfortunately, mother nature had other plans. Of course, it still is the grand opening of Miamist, but we can't be all that grand (read: snarky) about it. Instead of breaking out far too many jokes about Will Smith's "Miami," we're just going to be reading the site all day as they update us on Hurricane Wilma, the......

Last week Mayor John Street announced a ten year, $10 million plan to eradicate homelessness in the City of Brotherly Love. The $10 million for the project is already accounted for, having been earmarked from city, state and federal funds. There's a plan, devised by city officials meeting with homeless advocates and other experts. It's a huge undertaking, but one that Phillyist feels is incredibly important for the future of our city. But can it......

Dear Fellow Penn Students: As a rule, we’re proud to consider ourselves among you. As the admissions office tells us Quakers, we’re among the best and brightest in the country. Ostensibly, that should make us some of the most observant, too. As once-and-current Quakers ourselves, we know that sometimes, it pays to be unobservant. Running the gauntlet that is Locust Walk, eye contact is dangerous; the first person you look at wants you to come......

The Roots brought down the house at the Kimmel Center on Friday night, bringing a rather stagnant crowd to its feet for a two-and-a-half hour set that spanned the entire Roots discography. As fans of all ages and dress entered the Kimmel, they sat on their hands for most of the show, which included solid if unspectacular sets from Deerhoof and TV on the Radio. The Roots, however, amazed the sell-out crowd from the......

Wandering down Locust Walk at Penn tonight like you always do on a Friday night? Stop by Van Pelt Library for an outdoor performance of Love's Labour's Lost, a play from William Shakespeare that may possibly be popular and well-known. We don't know, we're not the literary types, unless literature includes flipping through Philadelphia magazine. The play is directed by our very own Jill Ivey, who does the weekly theatre listings. Well, except for this......

We like to go and cruise that Information Superhighway from time to time. And when we're not doing that, we like to get sucked into the big black hole that is the Philadelphia Blogosphere. Here's the good, the bad and the Eskin for Friday, September 9th. >>> Remembering Dave Roberts: Even though Channel 6's Dave Roberts isn't dead (in fact, um, he's still on the air), the kind folks at Philadelphia's LiveJournal community are "fondly"......

It looks like the big push for volunteers and donations for Philly's expected share of Hurricane Katrina survivors was premature. While Mayor Street is still committed to hosting up to 5,000 survivors from the affected region if needed, 38 people and one dog arrived yesterday, but no more are expected. Governor Ed Rendell told the Daily News:"They don't want to go a long way from home. They certainly don't want to go into cold weather.......

Recent unfortunate meteorological events in the Southeast have been dominating the news lately, and the emotional and economic toll on the nation have been vast. Even Phillyist, normally as phlegmatic as they come, has been feeling a little down and in dire need of a stiff drink. But of course, then comes the guilt: What are we doing sitting around and drinking when we could be doing something to help? Fortunately, thanks to The Museum......
