  • Meanwhile, the Ada H. Lewis Middle School in East Germantown might be voted closed on June 20th by the School Reform Commission, due to declining enrollment and a $38 million repair estimate. But parents and teachers are fighting to keep the school open, especially since it sounds pretty clear that $38 million is a ridiculously inflated number.
  • The union that represents faculty and coaches at the 14 state-owned universities in Pennsylvania has voted overwhelmingly to strike "if contract negotiations with the State System of Higher Education break down." Current contracts expire June 30, so the earliest strike date would be July 1. Here's hoping negotiations go well!
  • The Kingsessing Recreation Center, site of an April 12 shooting, has long had, and continues to have, problems with drugs and violence. Residents don't feel the city is doing enough. The regular monthly meeting of the Kingsessing Recreation Center Advisory Council is tonight at 7 at 50th St. and Kingsessing Ave.

  • In case you were not aware, the Flower Show started this weekend. We'll be posting more about this later, but for now, enjoy the Inquirer's preview, which includes a short history of the show, and an explanation of its theme ("Legends of Ireland"). The Flower Show runs now through next Sunday (March 11th) at the Pennsylvania Convention Center at 12th and Arch.
  • Speaking of holiday shopping, a Philly community group has called for a boycott of Urban Outfitters, due to them selling a gun-shaped Christmas ornament this year.
  • Hey, Dr. J might buy the Sixers! Or, to be more accurate, he's the leader of a group of folks who are thinking of purchasing the team, according to a Daily News source.
  • Because, somebody found 'em. A young boy - who looks to be between 8 and 10 years old, 4'7", 80 pounds - was found on the 5700 block of Rising Sun Avenue on Saturday in a sleeveless blue T-shirt and black flip flops. Then, weirdly enough, another boy was found just yesterday around 60th and Chestnut (follow the link for a picture). This one also had a blue shirt and flip flops on. Both are now in the care of the Department of Human Services.
