A steaming hot pile of our favorite things from around the internets.

If you haven’t noticed, the Philadelphia sports climate is pretty bleak these days. The Sixers suck. The Eagles are golfing. The Flyers are irrelevant. And the Phillies are currently nickel-and-diming perhaps the greatest slugger in a generation, hoping that an arbitrator will make him play for a relative pittance. So there is pretty much no reason to go to an arena or stadium near you to watch our local pituitary cases compete in the games of chance. And yet, on February 1, the lowest common denominator of our fine city will flock to the Wachovia Center. They will begin tailgating at 4 a.m. Come 6 a.m., they will enter the building, whereupon they will take their seats and longingly ogle the “Wingettes” in their bras and panties. They will buy $8 Bud Lights from the concession stands, and will be completely wasted before many of us have stepped in the shower. They will stand and cheer at fat losers as they stuff their filthy gobs with artery-clogging Buffalo wings. When the spectacle has concluded and a “winner” is announced, these fine gents, fresh from the most intimate contact they have had with a woman in eons, will file out of the doors and head straight to the nearest strip club to further sate their throbbing libidos. Bear in mind that this will probably be the most intellectual activity that these fellows will have indulged in all week. At the end of the day, they will vomit in the public common and drunkenly drive their vehicles home in a treacherous version of “Commuter Roulette.” Sound like fun? Then, by all means, head over to South Philly for the 610-WIP-sponsored Wing Bowl 16, “The Showdown in the Hot Sauce.” (To tailgate. This flimsy excuse to get wasted actually sold out a major sports arena... AGAIN.)

The shapeless dough of the internet, formed into tasty pellets and baked to perfection, just for you.

Last Friday & the weekend: Michael probably doesn't know it, but he got a shout-out from Hot Hot Heat frontman Michael Bays at last week's FREEZEtival before the band played "Bandages." What the connection between the song and our mayor is, we have no idea. And in real news, Michael named his appointees to the Pennsylvania Convention Center Authority board.

Philly sure can attract the celebrity. Yesterday Senator Hillary Clinton graced our fair walks to secure support from Governor Rendell and Mayor Nutter for her presidential bid. But her appearance pales in importance against the paragon of womanhood who is visiting us today. Yes, folks, that’s right: Paris Hilton is in town. Again. This time she’s not shilling perfume, but rather her new film The Hottie and the Nottie. Although it doesn’t get an official release for another couple of weeks, we think it is a shoo-in for a special honor on CinePhillyist, and we’ll place our bets on that now. Anyways, Ms. Hilton was on the 10 Show! this morning and will be visiting Franklin Mills Mall tonight from 6-7PM prior to the premiere of said instant-classic at the mall’s AMC. She’s not staying to actually watch it, since she’s not a masochist; it’s sadist all the way baby! Ronnie Polaneczky at the Daily News offers her some tips and history, much of which is interesting and thought-provoking. Especially the part about her getting a massage on one of the Minute Masseuse lounge chairs next to a feisty WWII vet. That’s Hot. (Oh, come on, you knew it was coming.)

We had very high hopes when we made our way to the Electric Factory for Y-Rock on XPN's FREEZEtival 2008. After all, Louis XIV (MySpace) delivers smart, edgy electro-rock, Editors' (MySpace) first two albums have gotten some pretty good critical reviews, and Hot Hot Heat (MySpace) is one of those bands that we remember enjoying like five years ago and lost track of, so we were eager to hear what they've been up to.

It got cold all of a sudden, didn't it? We had a nice little mild winter going—just like we'd asked for—for a little while. But suddenly, it's, well, winter in Philadelphia. And winter means one thing: frigid, freezing weather. So, appropriately, Y-Rock on XPN is bringing FREEZEtival 2008 to the Electric Factory tomorrow night.

When the weather outside is frightful, thoughts may not immediately turn to the contents of the freezer. Phillyist thinks this is a major oversight: what about ice cream and warm pie? Hot fudge sundaes? (Do you see where we’re going with this?) The folks at Turkey Hill are set to help you mend your misguided snacking ways with their 12 Days of Ice Cream, which starts today and runs through December 25. Every day will bring a new entry on The Ice Cream Journal, including mention of an ice cream related product. Comment on the post, and you’ll be entered in a drawing for said product. On December 26 they’ll pick a winner for the grand prize: a one-year supply of Turkey Hill ice cream. Possible post-Christmas gift? Sign us (or rather comment us) up.

In Los Angeles, LAist most definitely celebrated Thanksgiving like no other. After all, one has to keep up all the energy to keep on walking the line at the Writers Strike and fighting the unfortunate return of the wildfires in Malibu, which single handedly destroyed over fifty homes within the first 24 hours. National outlets may be covering the fires, but CNN also found it is easier to buy a gun than fruit and veggies in South Central. On the entertainment front, the Red Hot Chili Peppers are suing Showtime over the show titled Californication and Rami Kashou of Project Runway chatted with LAist about his Palestinian heritage and, of course, designing beauty.

With the frosty mornings this week, there's no doubt fall has arrived, and with it thoughts of the impending winter holidays... and chilly commutes. The folks at Starbucks will be easing the transition to both tomorrow morning in celebration of the return of their red cup; greeters will regale commuters at 30th Street with oodles of goodies from 7-10AM. There will be samples of appropriate winter drinks, including Christmas Blend, Peppermint Mocha, and Hot Chocolate....

Last night, I saw what for me was the funniest movie of the year. And since I paid for it and this is not an official review, I am going to show it some love. If the impenetrable heat has you down, get over to the Ritz at the Bourse and see The Ten, pronto. Here are ten reasons to follow these instructions immediately.

What's new and/or interesting in Philly theaters this weekend.

LAist was comped front row seats by the Dodgers due to Malingering being struck by a foul ball last week, and she came back with some great photos, and earlier made fun of 4th of July on Venice Beach. But the biggest stories of the week was that the Mayor's Hot Tamale was revealed, and that a Kwik-E-Mart was erected in Burbank.

What with Paris Hilton's release earlier this week and the upcoming celebration of American Independence (sorry, Londonist!), we've been thinking a lot about freedom. Freedom to vote, freedom to choose, and most importantly, freedom to blog. Here are a few things we're happy we've been free to blog about this week.

Seattlest has a talk with the photographer from last week's "Segway Mom" and then experiences some dissension in the ranks over the question of wine vs. beer. It's not West Side Story, but about as close as they'll get. They're also still waiting on some inbox relief after a spammer is arrested.

Holy crap, it's June! June 1, to be exact. And how convenient that the first day of June happens to also be the first Friday in June. If you can brave tonight's expected showers, here are three spots we recommend:

...Cover Songs: Seriously, who in Shakira's entourage thought that covering AC/DC was a good idea? (Via Horny Oyster.)

So you thought that Starbucks was finished with its quest for total domination in the land of hot caffeinated beverages? Maybe they are. They are not, however, finished with their domination of early morning (and even mid-afternoon) munchies.

The nicer the weather gets, the busier we get across the Ist-A-Verse. But we like being busy. Here's a peek at what we've been up to since last week!

There's so much going on across the Ist-a-Verse that it's almost impossible to keep track these days. Fortunately, we do it so you don't have to!
