  • Three teens were killed and three others critically injured Saturday night when the car they were riding in on American Street at Cecil B. Moore Avenue was rammed by another car coming in the opposite direction. The driver of the other car, 27-year-old Presley Hanif, jumped out of the car and ran, but was arrested yesterday afternoon.
  • The weather's gotten colder, but First Friday still has some goodies that should get you out of your homes, apartments, and cardboard boxes. So put on your fall jacket, nip a little wine or whiskey to keep warm, and get out to First Friday for some great events.

  • A Northeast Philadelphia boy imitating a stunt from the latest Jackass movie threw himself out a second-story window and landed on his head. He was in critical condition as of Wednesday.
  • Apparently some folks in New Jersey are pretending to be farmers - by owning a horse or two, or mowing a little hay in their spare time - in order to receive breaks on their property taxes. "Garden State" indeed...
  • - And speaking of local lawmakers getting uppity, Senator Vince Fumo has declared the war in Iraq to be "unnecessary, immoral and counterproductive." In the same speech he referred to the Bush presidency as a "dictatorship" and also accused the administration of ignoring the Constitution. That pesky Constitution. Seems Pennsylvania Senators are fixated on it.

  • Pennsylvania's infrastructure did get a passing grade after being examined by the American Society of Civil Engineers, but only just barely. They gave our state a D, and told us our roads, bridges and dams are falling apart and need immediate improvement. Besides those elements, the report also assesses the state's airports, drinking water, waterways, railways, and transit and wastewater systems. Apparently the only thing in decent shape are the railroads, which got an individual grade of a B. If something related to SEPTA is the best thing we've got going for us, we really do have some work to do.
  • It looks like the big push for volunteers and donations for Philly's expected share of Hurricane Katrina survivors was premature. While Mayor Street is still committed to hosting up to 5,000 survivors from the affected region if needed, 38 people and one dog arrived yesterday, but no more are expected.

    Phillyist urges you to be careful when riding SEPTA - a 24 year old woman was brutally raped and beaten early yesterday morning at the Chinatown Broad Street line station. Her attacker has not yet been caught.

    Or in this case, the grisly dismembering.
