2007 was without a doubt a year of challenge for hip-hop. Reports of its demise were on the tip of just about everybody's tongue. Crunk had come and gone, Jay-Z was in retirement, those that came up in the mid-nineties hip-hop hey day rewinding big verses over and over didn't listen to the radio anymore. The dirty party rhymes of the past now nothing but misogynistic trash; yesterday's raw statements on American life in the ghetto became needlessly violent, potentially dangerous minstrel music. After being hailed as the American culture movement of a generation, the bling had lost its luster.

On stage, Regan J Farquhar wears a plain pink shirt with white block lettering that says, “Sorry, the underground happened 10 years ago.” In between songs, he sways gently from the stage rafters with his eyes closed and his head back in the midst of an impromptu freestyle. Riding high/spiting/rolling by rushing on this suck and jive/Busdrive/shit. Jumping into a bouncy beat something like Kanye, Mia and a rave, he moans into the microphone, stumbles...

When our friend first played a track for us by The Go! Team we thought it sounded like The Electric Company meets Nintendo music meets cheerleaders on crack. And that was only the first album. Their new CD, Proof of Youth, is back with a tighter version of the band, creating music that is even more bonkers. With guest stars ranging from Chuck D (wha!?!) to Bonde do Role's Marina Ribatski, you have to see it to believe it. Which you can accomplish by watching the video embedded above.

Dame Kiri Te Kanawa stops by Philadelphia for a recital of Mozart, Strauss, Poulenc, Puccini and Copland on her Farewell Tour. This may be your last chance to hear the world-renowned New Zealand soprano.

For the uninitiated, raised only on Bad Boy singles and Hype-William’s videos, hip-hop culture is typically said to break down into four "elements."

The Rotunda on 40th and Walnut is known for its support of the Philadelphia hip-hop community. It is the home to "The Gathering," a monthly jam session featuring open ciphers, live painters, break crews, and guest djs. It also hosts many local hip-hop acts though out the year. This past Friday, I attended the Art of War Lyricist competition a contest pitting polished spoken word artists against quick-lipped freestyling MCs. It is a interesting concept, as the line between a poet and an MC has always been fuzzy. Well, on Friday the answer was clear.

  • A report to be released today by City Controller Alan Butkovitz shows that two decades of expensive attempts to build a new computerized water billing system have achieved little, and the system will almost certainly not be done by the time Mayor Street leaves office, as the administration promised.
  • As you've probably noticed, it's been hot and humid around here recently, which is uncomfortable and disgusting for everybody, but can also be deadly for some, especially the elderly. The Inquirer has an article about how people are coping, and helping other people cope.
  • We at the Gothamist network would like to express our heartfelt wishes to the people of Minnesota in the days after their tragic bridge collapse. We're not trying to discount the severity of the accident by making note of it in opposition to our usual -Ist lightheartedness – we just wanted to take a moment and recognize those affected last week.
