Happy first weekend of September - and happy Labor Day weekend, too, for our American cities! Let's take a look at what's been happening around the Ist-a-verse.

  • A man who was convicted in 1993 in a 1991 Nicetown rape and murder case is hoping to get DNA testing that he says will exonerate him; if the state Superior Court does rule in his favor and allow the testing, it may open the door to many more PA convicts getting DNA tests.
  • The Daily News has a run-down of some of the crime that occurred in the city this past weekend, and it includes a story about a potential burglar getting his head caught in a trapdoor and suffocating to death while trying to rob a bar. In other crime news, a man followed up a bungled attempt to rob the PNC Bank on 19th near Chestnut last Thursday morning with a more successful robbery of the TD Banknorth on Chestnut near 5th some 75 minutes later.
  • Phillyist is willing to put on a brave face for almost anything...except excessive heat. (Seriously, when we found ourselves unemployed a few years back we whined considerably less than we have in the past eight hours alone. But...you know...it's just so hoooooooootttttttttttttt.)

We’re sitting there now, at the Twenty Two Gallery Café. Our laptops are plugged into the conveniently placed power strip and we’re surfing the web on the free wireless internet. The temperature is blissfully cool, in sharp contrast to the 90 degrees plus outside, the heat wave that just won’t quit. It’s Saturday afternoon, and there’s only one other customer.

Or in this case, the grisly dismembering.
