  • A man wanted for the murder of a four-year-old boy was arrested early this morning in Philadelphia.
  • Philadelphia photographer, founder of phillyskyline.com, and friend of Phillyist Brad Maule has sued The Colbert Report, and the Philadelphia Daily News and Inquirer for using his photographs without permission. He is seeking $1.25 million in damages.
  • The Daily News examines how an alleged DUI killer's outrageous MySpace page is not exactly helping his case. (What a freaking idiot.)
  • Yesterday the City Council's Law and Government Committee approved legislation that would ask voters if they want to fold the Fairmount Park Commission into the city's Department of Recreation.
  • A while back, state legislators increased pay for injured police officers and made it easier for them to resist returning to work. Now on any given day, roughly 250 Philadelphia police officers are out of service due to on-the-job injuries. That's more than 10 times as many as just a few years ago. City risk manager Barry Scott said although most officers do the right thing and go back to work when they're ready, the new rules make it easier to abuse the system.
  • The Sixers spanked the Knicks (124-84) on Wednesday night at the Wach. Tonight they will be in Orlando, then they’ll turn around and host the Magic on Wednesday at 7PM (get tickets or watch here). Here’s hoping that’ll be two for two. Tomorrow they’ll match up with the Miami Heat, against whom they are 2-0 this season.

The Sixers lost to the Orlando Magic Saturday in an excruciatingly close game (108-106). They will try to regroup tomorrow night against the Washington Wizards at 7PM at the Wach (get tickets or watch here), and the Miami Heat on Thursday at 7PM at the Wach (get tickets or watch here).

I don't eat eggs (unless they're in a cake or something), so that limits my breakfast options quite a bit. It also forces me to be creative. I created this hash using chickpeas (garbanzo beans) because they're higher in protein than potatoes, thus making me feel better about the fact that I'm not topping it with eggs. Beware, though: chickpeas are also more caloric and higher in carbs than potatoes, so you'll want a smaller serving than you'd get with ordinary potato hash. That's why I put lots of fresh veggies in the recipe – better for you per bite, and no less delicious.

Last Friday & the weekend: Michael probably doesn't know it, but he got a shout-out from Hot Hot Heat frontman Michael Bays at last week's FREEZEtival before the band played "Bandages." What the connection between the song and our mayor is, we have no idea. And in real news, Michael named his appointees to the Pennsylvania Convention Center Authority board.

We had very high hopes when we made our way to the Electric Factory for Y-Rock on XPN's FREEZEtival 2008. After all, Louis XIV (MySpace) delivers smart, edgy electro-rock, Editors' (MySpace) first two albums have gotten some pretty good critical reviews, and Hot Hot Heat (MySpace) is one of those bands that we remember enjoying like five years ago and lost track of, so we were eager to hear what they've been up to.

It got cold all of a sudden, didn't it? We had a nice little mild winter going—just like we'd asked for—for a little while. But suddenly, it's, well, winter in Philadelphia. And winter means one thing: frigid, freezing weather. So, appropriately, Y-Rock on XPN is bringing FREEZEtival 2008 to the Electric Factory tomorrow night.

No, this isn’t a Halloween post, though it could be. Viva Voce will be playing at Johnny Brenda’s on Friday the 13th (cue sinister music here) with Silversun Pickups and Like a Fox.

The Foo Fighters and Weezer bring their co-headlining tour and its many nicknames (Foozer, Wee Fighters, This Totally Would Have Kicked Ass In 1997) to the Wachovia Center. Travel back in time with obsessed fans as they shout out requests for "El Scorcho" and "Everlong" and then watch their hearts get crushed as the bands rip into "Beverly Hills" and "Best of You."

Along with the end of summer comes the end of all things wonderful that are derived from the summer garden – tomatoes, eggplant, basil, zucchini and everyone’s favorite, the humble cob of corn. Corn doesn’t freeze well on the cob (we’ve tried it and failed), so what does one do in an attempt to salvage the last of the crop?... But at best, it gets sliced off the cob and turned into a wonderful corn chowder which coincidentally DOES freeze well.... flour ¼ lb bacon (diced) 1 large onion (diced) 2 cloves garlic (minced) 4 new potatoes (diced) 3 carrots (diced) 4 stalks celery (diced) ¼ tsp.

    Dear Philadelphia:

Some Phillyist writers aren't down with the public nudity, but some of us dig it - if only because it makes for bizarre local news. Take, for instance, what happened today at 8th and Market:
