Phillyist Playlist: Erin McCarley at World Cafe Live

If you don't know singer/songwriter Erin McCarley's music, you should. Like, right now. You can start by listening to her full album on MySpace, and then coming to see her this Sunday, October 11, at World Cafe Live. Tickets are $13, which is a helluva bargain. (Her album, Love, Save the Empty, is only her first. Give her a year or two to really catch on, and tickets prices are going to skyrocket.)

The shapeless dough of the internet, formed into tasty pellets and baked to perfection, just for you.

To the Writers Guild of America: It's not that I don't support your fight. I do. I've signed your petition. I'm a writer myself, and I'd hate it if I wasn't profiting from my own work. (If I was working in TV or film, that is – bloggers don't exactly earn residuals...) But here's the thing: as I write this, I'm watching a month-old episode of Journeyman. My DVR is 95% full. I've just discovered...

If you are a Grey's Anatomy fan, you know that part of the fun of the show is listening to the great indie music they use. Kate Havnevik, The Ditty Bops, The Fray and The Postal Service have all been featured on their soundtracks. That's some pretty awesome music. Season three was no exception. Ingrid Michaelson ended that season with the beautiful song "Corner of Your Heart." This was her fourth song featured on Grey's...

Honestly, I didn't think that there would be any difference after the TLA was branded the Fillmore at the TLA. I thought the new sign was it. Boy was I wrong. Besides the new flooring, lighting, fabric on the walls, and a stall in the men's restroom (which was nice and a much needed addition), the new branding offered me a chance at a fresh start. Prior to the branding, I didn't have good...

Today's reason that we love Philadelphia is that Kate Havnevik and Air will be playing at the Fillmore at the TLA. While the weather is coming in a close second, it doesn't surpass tonight's concert. Havnevik will only play thirteen cities in the country and Philadelphia is one of them. We are so damn lucky. Last week we introduced you to Kate Havnevik, pronounced "Hav-ne-veek", through a detailed interview on her life, music, tour,...

Know that really cool custom tote bag we were giving away earlier this month, courtesy of rockin' indie band Let's Go Sailing? Well, the band is really taking off. Even Hollywood loves 'em! So much so, in fact, that one of the songs off their debut album, . (One of the others is embedded here.) Not bad for the new kids on the block, right?

Last year when Jamie Cullum came to town, Brandi Carlile opened for him. What a great surprise for all of us in the audience. Not only was she a great performer, but her music rocked as well. Now we get a chance to see Brandi Carlile headline her own tour at World Cafe Live. She has already sold out this performance and the several other cities on her North American tour. Brandi Carlile released...

Sometimes it's nice not to have any expectations. That way a kiss on the cheek or a punch in the gut takes you by surprise and you experience it more fully. We're happy to report that on Saturday night at Johnny Brenda's, two bands left us totally winded.

Last night, I set my DVR to record at least six different shows and then headed out to the North Star Bar. I was a bit irked that I had to miss Grey's Anatomy, but I knew it was still going to be there when I got home. It seems the rest of Philadelphia didn't want to risk not knowing what happened to Meredith Grey because there was no one at the North Star...

What's new and/or interesting in Philly theaters this weekend.

The show may be set in Seattle, but the music's all Philly. Musician Bill Ricchini, whom Phillyist interviewed a while back, had a song during a very important moment in a recent episode of (a show that just happens to be on TV tonight). And we thought it was our duty to pass it along to you.

...Mischief: Utah Jazz player Carlos Boozer (we're refraining from making a joke about his name) has filed a complaint against Prince, who is currently renting Boozer's Southern California home. The Artist, or somebody employed by him, made "unauthorized home improvements" in the form of purple stripes and other decorations (including Prince's symbol and "3121," the name of his new album.) Oh, Dave Chappelle, where are you and why aren't you making fun of this? (Via Fox Sports, with photos courtesy of What Would Tyler Durden Do?)

Here's what you missed in the last twenty-four hours on some of the other -ist sites:

Despite the protests of our Grey's Anatomy-lovin' readership, we're going to march on with our coverage of the T.O. drama that has strangled the city over the past week.
