The good news for the Drexel men (12-19, 5-13) is that, unlike last year, they won't be sitting on the edges of their seats waiting to see if they get an invitation to the Big Dance. The Dragons ended their regular season with a Senior Night win over James Madison before losing on the road at Hofstra. With the regular season over, it's CAA tournament time, and Drexel will open with a matchup against Delaware. The Dragons and Blue Hens split their regular season games. For the women (17-11, 12-5), it was a good week: they posted wins over Towson and George Mason. Two Drexel players also earned individual CAA honors, with Gabriela Marginean being named CAA Player of the Week, and Jasmina Rosseel getting the nod as CAA Rookie of the Week. The women will wrap up their regular season at Georgia State tomorrow night.

Despite their name, NYC four-piece Vampire Weekend (MySpace) is not a shoe-gazing, emo goth band. In fact, their self-titled debut LP, just released at the end of last month, is perhaps best described as "sunny" - the very antithesis of a vampire's idea of a good weekend. This band, beloved of many blogs (including us), performs bouncy, funny, clever, retro indie/punk/pop/New Wave songs about love. Their music is so fun it feels like there has to be something wrong with it, but nothing is. It's been a while since we listened to an album the first time through, and loved every song on it instantly. (Although of course we did love some more than others; the head-bopping "A-Punk," which they performed live on Letterman just the other night, is the best, and "One (Blake's Got a New Face)" is the worst.) If you haven't got your copy of the album yet, hit the R5 Productions website to download some free MP3s.

The Drexel Lady Dragons (11-9, 6-3) split their games this week, losing at Northeastern before coming away with a solid road win at Hofstra. In both games, the Dragons got a big contribution from sophomore forward Gabriela Marginean, who was named Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week for her efforts. The men (9-14, 2-9) went 0-2 (again) this week, dropping games to Georgia State and Northeastern. The two losses brings the Dragons' losing streak to five games. On deck for the men: home games against George Mason tomorrow night, and Towson on Saturday. The women host Georgia State tomorrow night, then go on the road to VCU Sunday. (Tickets for all home games are available through the Drexel Ticket Office: 1-866-4-DREXEL.)

  • A man outside at a New Year's party in East Germantown, confronted by police for firing his gun into the air, turned the gun on the officers, and was in turn fired upon. Although neither police nor the gunman were hurt, three people inside the house where the party was going on were struck by stray bullets. A similar incident happened only ten minutes later in North Philadelphia. Police asked men to surrender their weapons, and instead they fled and one turned his gun on the officers, and was subsequently shot in the ankle. In all, three were arrested and four injured.
  • I'm a music guy. I listen to a ton of music, and because of Phillyist, I've been able to hear a lot of great stuff I never would have heard otherwise. But, no matter how much of a music fan you are, there are always some great albums that slip through the cracks and you don't manage to hear, even though you really should. So here are ten albums from 2007 I really should have heard by now, but for some reason haven't. Some are on this list because of critical buzz, while others are based on my own thoughts about the artists. And I pose the question to you, dear readers: Which two or three of these albums should I use my lovely Amazon gift card to buy?

The Phillies have signed free-agent Brett Favre…er, 33-year-old outfielder Geoff Jenkins (see the resemblance?) and 30-year-old starter/reliever Chad Durbin, continuing a rather dulling off-season for the Fightins.

Apparently the word could soon be heading to the real dictionary. (Via Jill) Uh oh - looks like the upper ups at Warner Bros. demanded some last minute changes to the ending of I Am Legend. That's rarely good news... Supposedly The Movie Blog got their hands on some...

  • Meanwhile, Delaware County Republicans have their own election problems, which include W., declining party registration, and the real chance that a Democrat might win a council seat for the first time in nearly 30 years.

With unseasonable weather descending upon much of North America, schools getting ready to reconvene, and sports seasons getting exciting, it's a busy time of year for us here in the Ist-A-Verse. Luckily, even with all the things we have to do, we still managed to get together to let you know what we've all been up to.

Boy, did I wake up to good news this morning!? As it states on page D2 of today’s Philadelphia Inquirer, Brian Tierney’s publication has stripped Stephen A. Smith of his column-writing duties, effective immediately. They have stated that they want him to return to reporting, which, since he spends most of his time in cities not named Philadelphia, is probably code for “Here’s your hat, what’s your hurry?” Now I don’t want to rush to judgment and say that my column of the 17th of August 2007 was the reason for this unceremonious demotion… but until I hear otherwise, that is exactly what I will do. So since I have been able to accomplish this lofty goal, you can read eight more wishes I would like to see fulfilled after the jump.

  • Four Democratic candidates for president visited our city yesterday, courting the National Education Association, who are holding their national representative assembly here at the moment, and the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, who were holding a presidential forum in North Philly.
  • If you try to search Google for Tacconelli's Pizzeria you may, depending on your choice of keywords, find either the original store in Philadelphia or the splinter faction in New Jersey. Perhaps taking a cue from the myriad of splinter cheese steak factions found in Philadelphia, there are two Taconelli’s. Don’t get fooled and schlep out to Burlington County, but instead go to the original in the Port Richmond section of Philadelphia.

  • About 1:30AM yesterday morning a woman died when she crashed her car into the back of a stationary PennDot dump truck in a construction zone on northbound I-95 near the Chichester Avenue exit. Northbound traffic was detoured until the lanes were reopened at about 4:30AM.
  • John S. Carter, the former president of the Independence Seaport Museum, pleaded guilty yesterday to charges that he misused more than $1 million of the museum's money to fund his own lavish lifestyle.
  • Our fair neighboring state of NJ is getting close to banning sex offenders from using the internet. Woah. We're not sure how to feel about that.

    FYI

The good news: we're moving to a new, much better server system on our back-end! Sounds hot, doesn't it? The bad news: you may see some errors, some outdated content, and you may have trouble commenting now through Monday. Sorry! But once everything's in place, the site shouldn't just be back to normal - it should be better than normal!

High up on my list of unforgivable sins? Poorly-attended performances of great plays and bands. (I think that may be because I want the rest of the world to have my taste in the arts realm. Maybe I'd actually turn the radio on once in a while...) Unfortunately, Gran Bel Fisher's show at the World Cafe Live last night didn't break any attendance records—and his opening act, Lelia Broussard, was performing to an almost-empty house. People, we tell you about these shows for a reason! Go see them!
