Last year's For the Love of Pig Iron benefit show, "PIG FEAT!" was one of the best performances we saw all year. This one-night-only variety show featured drag acts, dancing, music, and the most spirited, competitive, live auction we've ever seen. We knew we'd be back in 2008.
Girls Rock Philly, the organization, is gearing up for Girls Rock Philly, a week-long alternative music camp for girls aged 10-18. This is the first time Philadelphia will host such a camp (we're slightly behind Chicago, New York, Portland, and Murfreesboro, TN), and they need your help to make this debut really, well, rocking.
Girls Rock Philly, a day camp for girls ten through eighteen years of age, is set to run this summer from August 6-11. The camp teaches aspiring female rock stars how to play instruments, write songs, create merchandise, sell merchandise - basically just about everything they'd need to know to start their own band. Applications for campers are being accepted until June 30.
Girls Rock Philly is part of a foundation that works to run summer camps for local girls, ages ten through eighteen, in which they get the opportunity to "make their own band." In the process, they do musical training, while also honing their song writing skills and learning how to design band merchandise. Girls Rock Camp began in Portland, Oregon, in 2000, and this year will be its first summer in Philly.
A very cool event for a very cool cause is going down tomorrow night, and we wanted you to know about it. The event is a winter-themed dance party called Shake & Shiver, featuring music, film screenings, a raffle, refreshments, and a holiday photo booth.
