Hidden City Highlights Undercover Treasures

Art and decay have oft had a love/hate relationship. Look no further than the inspirations of Marcel Duchamp or the crumbling Colosseum in Rome. Time (and lack of preservation) may eventually rob us of some of our cultural treasures, but it also inspires the creation new artistic works. This month's Hidden City Festival organized by Peregrine Arts and produced in partnership with the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia and the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage seeks to highlight this circular phenomenon. Inspired by some of Philadelphia's most spectacular "forgotten" landmarks, a small army of artists have put together an unique collection of multimedia installations, dance and music presentations.

Frugal Fun Alert: Thursday

Fun around town, for $10 or less:

There’s a lot of dance and film going on around here lately: Tomorrow night Miro Dance Theatre presents Miro Through the Lens, a dance film and video workshop featuring works by Miro’s own Tobin Rothlein. The works include several local artists, including dancers from the Pennsylvania Ballet and Phrenic New Ballet, and the evening is moderated by award-winning experimental filmmaker Maria Teresa Rodriguez; after the screenings she will lead a discussion with the audience about the place and use of film in dance performance. Look for our review of the whole shebang later this week. As always with Miro’s performances, this is a cheap date; both the screenings and discussion are free.

We love salsa dancing. So even though it may have been more appropriate to celebrate the Cinco de Mayo last weekend, we're giving Miro Dance Theatre a pass, especially because their Cinco de Miro event sounds so darn cool. Featuring food, live music, and professional dance performances, the event will also host a salsa dancing competition. For a taste of what you may see there, watch the video of the day, below.

  • Apparently every summer Senator Arlen Specter likes to visit all 67 counties in Pennsylvania and have a little Q&A session. Here's how the trip's going this year.
  • Girls Rock Philly, the organization, is gearing up for Girls Rock Philly, a week-long alternative music camp for girls aged 10-18. This is the first time Philadelphia will host such a camp (we're slightly behind Chicago, New York, Portland, and Murfreesboro, TN), and they need your help to make this debut really, well, rocking.

Headlining their fan appreciation tour, The Click Five does just that: appreciates their fans. North Star Bar, a great little venue near Girard College, made their venue teenager-friendly by letting the under-21 fans enter through the back door and placing a bouncer at the door in between the bar and stage area. As I was standing there waiting for The Click Five, I saw one fan with a Fall Out Boy purse. (A purse...
