Why don’t more of us like poetry? Is it too non-linear? Too difficult to break down in a matter of minutes? Are we too skeptical of the writer? Are we unsure why we should dedicate our time to the suggestions of a stranger? Or does it remind us of school, evoking some repressed hostility towards the teacher who didn’t like us or our apathetic attitude towards Robert Frost? Yolanda Wisher, an English instructor at Germantown Friends School and a well-known local poet, isn’t that teacher. Tomorrow, she will showcase a group of adult and high school spoken word artists at an outdoor festival in Germantown’s Vernon Park.

  • Authorities yesterday released an enhanced video that may show the man who robbed and shot aspiring teacher and Starbucks employee Beau Zabel. Click through to view the video, and certainly contact police if you think you can identify the suspect.
  • The Philadelphia Museum of Art announced yesterday that it had finally raised the last chunk of money needed to keep Thomas Eakins' iconic painting The Gross Clinic in Philadelphia.
  • 23-year-old Chante Wright, as part of a deal to cut her boyfriend's jail sentence, agreed to testify in a murder case. It was a dangerous move, and her testimony was crucial, so "she became the first state witness in Philadelphia to enter the federal witness-protection program." She was given a new identity and moved to Florida. Unfortunately, she defied authorities and returned to Philadelphia to visit her gravely ill grandmother. She was killed early Saturday, only seven hours after coming back to the city.
  • Some big traffic messes this morning: I-95 North in Delaware County is backed up due to an accident, which also created a gaper delay on the southbound side, and slowed things up on the southbound Blue Route. To make things worse, as of 8:15AM the Ben Franklin Bridge is backed up westbound due to some malfunctioning traffic signals. Motorists are advised to take the Walt Whitman instead.
  • Philly's three African elephants now have new travel plans: Pittsburgh. Here's hoping that this deal doesn't fall through like the last one did. And that they don't become Steelers fans.
  • Also pleading guilty was a man who stole 165 Civil War documents from the National Archives Philadelphia office. He sold between 70 and 80 of them on eBay - which is actually what got him caught. Now he could spend as many as 10 years in jail.
  • There are 14 full-service passport agencies in the country, including one in Philadelphia, and all of them, including the one in Philadelphia, are seeing an incredible increase in business this year due to the fact that, since January 23rd, U.S. citizens are now required to carry passports even when they travel to Mexico, Canada, Central America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda. The guy who runs the pizza place across from Philly's passport agency is also seeing a big increase in business, although he's a lot happier about it than anybody at the agency.
  • If you can't wait to see the result of the legal proceedings against Senator Vince Fumo... well, get used to disappointment, because the trial isn't likely to start until early 2008, and it'll probably go on three to four months.
