A five-alarm fire blazed for more than three hours yesterday evening in a warehouse in the 1300 block of North Front Street in Kensington. Service on the portion of the Market-Frankford El that runs nearby was halted during the fire. Firefighters were finally able to get it under control around 7:30PM. No one was injured.

As Phillyist Sarah pointed out yesterday in a comment on Philly in the News, Mark O'Donnell was arrested yesterday in the murder of Ebony Nicole Dorsey, the daughter of his girlfriend. He's been charged this morning with beating, strangling and sexually assaulting the 14-year-old. About 12:45 AM yesterday morning, cops pulled over a car in the 6000 block of Master Street in West Philadelphia because the vehicle had a light out. The driver - Kevin Fletcher, 44 - was incoherent, officers smelled alcohol, and there appeared to be narcotics in the car. When they tried to get Fletcher out of the vehicle, he drove off, leading police on a chase through Delaware County and into Chester County. The chase finally ended on Baltimore Pike in Marlborough Township when the police made use of a spiked device to flatten the tires on the car. Fletcher was charged with aggravated assault on an officer, driving under the influence, and related offenses.

The amendment is unnecessary because Pennsylvania already has a Defense of Marriage Act that prevents same-sex couples from marrying, Miss Sobel (ed, Stacey Sobel, executive director of the Center for Lesbian and Gay Civil Rights in Philadelphia) said yesterday. Also, if the language is "overly broad and vague" like other marriage amendments, it could have unforeseen negative consequences on both traditional marriages and other family groups, she said.

If the amendment passes both chambers in two successive legislative sessions, voters might have the opportunity to vote on the amendment as early as 2007.
