Dear Philadelphia: Go See Mr. Sulu TONIGHT

That's right, everyone. George Takei, who so famously, importantly, and awesomely played Mr. Sulu will be speaking at Drexel, for free, tonight. Drop everything and go. Seriously. If you need reasons on why you should go, we think that's silly, but here they are anyway:

Barack Obama's presidential win was somewhat bittersweet for the GLBT community, since punitive ballot measures like Proposition 8, which denies same-sex couples the right to marry, passed in California. But this weekend, people in cities all over the country (including Philadelphia, where the marcher tally reached almost 5000) resiliently rallied and joined together in protest. People of all ethnicities, ages and backgrounds chanted, sang, held hands, prayed, and gathered peacefully to demand their rights.

Philly, we are so proud of you.

Tomorrow, Saturday November 15th, from 1:30-4PM, Philadelphians will be protesting to join in the solidarity for marriage equality. Appropriately, the rally will be held across from LOVE Park (Broad & Market Streets at Dilworth Plaza), because that's what this issue is ultimately about: Love. And if you don't know why this mattters to everyone, watch this:

  • A bunch of insane people actually had a bike race in Manayunk this past weekend, and other insane people actually went outside to watch it. Uh, whatever. We were inside keeping cool.
  • Usually when we hear about a noted evangelical Christian author speaking about gays and the Church, we expect it to be something pretty exclusionary and hateful. But Professor Jack Rogers, former Moderator of the Presbyterian Church USA, is giving a lecture tonight (with a question and answer period afterwards) on the subject of gay rights, and it sounds like it might actually be pretty reasonable, open-minded, and, well...Christian. His latest book is called Jesus, the Bible, and Homosexuality: Explode the Myths, Heal the Church, and in it he talks about the personal change of heart he had on this issue. Also, according to the press release, "He examines how the church misused the Bible to justify slavery and the denial of rights to women, and he links these efforts to efforts today to use biblical texts to deny equal rights to gays and lesbians." Wow! Should be an interesting talk. And it's free!
