  • Chelsea Clinton was at Penn yesterday, stumping for her Mom, and said we should expect to see her and her family a lot in the near future. Which sounds like a threat to us. Beware, Philadelphians! They're coming! Watch the skies! Keep watching the skies! (BTW, in a related story, voter interest is surging in Pennsylvania suburbs.)
  • A five-alarm fire blazed for more than three hours yesterday evening in a warehouse in the 1300 block of North Front Street in Kensington. Service on the portion of the Market-Frankford El that runs nearby was halted during the fire. Firefighters were finally able to get it under control around 7:30PM. No one was injured.
  • The Inquirer's got the coverage of last night's presentation of the 86th annual Philadelphia Award to Leonore Annenberg.
  • The city owns the Broad Street subway and half the Market-Frankford El line, and has just been leasing them to SEPTA. As it happens, the lease is up. Nobody really thinks the city will steal the subway and the El back from SEPTA - because after all, who the hell would want to own the sub and the El? But the city is trying to use this fact as leverage in talks with SEPTA. They want respect, and more of a role in the running of SEPTA.
  • Hey, Sidney Poitier was in town Tuesday night to receive the Marian Anderson award at the Kimmel Center! The award "honors artists who are also humanitarians," and is named after a famous opera singer from South Philly.
  • Thanks to a Supreme Court ruling on a Montgomery County woman's case, the government is now just as liable for the consequences of their deliveries as UPS or FedEx is for theirs. Time to start suing the Postal Service, people! Btw, curious about the details of the case that brought this about? Turns out a carrier left mail for Barbara Dolan on her front step because her mailbox had been knocked over by a storm, and she tripped over it and hurt her wrist. This merits two Homer Simpson quotes: "D'oh!" and "Must hurt self..."
  • Philly's sweethearts of the 80's music scene, The Hooters, will be playing the World Cafe as part of Hifi House's 50th Anniversary Bash on the 16th. We had no idea the band was still together, but apparently they've been touring Europe for the past few years. It's about time they came back to show a little home town love.

As previously reported on Phillyist, SEPTA shut down the Market-Frankford El from 52nd Street to 69th Street starting at 8 pm on July 15th. While they had no problem starting their project on-time, they did have a problem finishing it on-time. The Market-Frankford El was not fully operational as of 5 am, but trains were able to enter the stations at 8:30 am. Outbound trains started departing the 69th Street Station at 9:00 am.

If you're a daily El rider, prepare for a change in routine. SEPTA announced that the Market-Frankford El will shut down this Friday at 8 pm for nine days from the 52nd Street station to the 69th Street station. Regular El service in that range of stations will resume at 5 am on July 25th. Don't get too comfortable, though. SEPTA also noted that these same stations will shut down from August 12th to the 22nd. Fear not, however. SEPTA plans to run shuttles starting at 40th Street for all riders. Sure, it will add 22 minutes to your day, and sure, Milton Street might be driving the bus, but it beats walking. Well, maybe not. El cars will still run from Frankford Terminal to 52nd Street. SEPTA says, however, that the cars will all be local during the down time. The shutdown is a part of a large-scale renovation project for SEPTA, currently budgeted at $567 million dollars. Here's hoping they take care of the smell, too. Photo credit: SEPTA
