Yesterday, a minivan operated by a driver using a cell phone ran a red light and careened into a SEPTA bus causing it to crash into a large El support beam. At least 16 people were injured in the accident.
Marueen Garrity confirmed last night that Foxwoods is considering moving its planned slots parlor from one end of Market East to the other. The gaming company is looking at empty floors in the Strawbridge & Clothier store at Eighth and Market Streets.
This week in futile displays of power: Michael released the names of fifty business-tax delinquents, who owe a combined $27 million to the city. Among the names on the list are one guy who's currently in jail (T. Milton Street, Sr.) and another (Neil Stein) who was jailed for—wait for it—tax evasion. And the number one delinquent is a company that doesn't even exist anymore. Good luck with your collections, Michael.
Michael applauded SEPTA's new train cars as a "better way to get around," and "a way to create jobs and economic development." We'll see if they're a way for SEPTA to run on time and without those pesky "slippery rail" delays.
A 22-year-old South Philadelphia man was fatally shot Saturday in the city's Point Breeze section, and on the same day, a 29-year-old man was shot to death near his home in the city's Logan section.
So much for being the good government guy who won't piss away our tax dollars on b.s. Michael is paying his own trip to the Democratic National Convention with his campaign funds, but the five staffers who are going with him are being paid for with city dollars. Philly.com is breaking news that, following a meeting between representatives of Foxwoods and Mayor Nutter and Governor Rendell, Foxwoods is considering looking at a different location to set up shop if and when they finally get around to building their casino in Philadelphia. It has to be emphasized that Foxwoods is considering an alternative location to their proposed site in South Philadelphia/Pennsport. This is by no means a definite, but it is the first sign of budging that either of the casino developers, Foxwoods and SugarHouse, have given in this whole big casino mess.
