How about those Phils? Their success is good, not only for fans, but also for the local economy. The election is getting closer, which means it's time for some voter intimidation! "An anonymous flier circulating in African-American neighborhoods in North and West Philadelphia states that voters who are facing outstanding arrest warrants or who have unpaid traffic tickets may be arrested at the polls on Election Day." This is false. A plumber was buried......

A fire broke out in City Hall shortly after 4:30AM on Saturday in a judge's chambers. The chambers were being remodeled and were not occupied. It's possible that an electrical problem was the cause. There were no injuries, although three other offices sustained smoke and water damage. Latrice Bryant, chief legislative aide to Philadelphia City Councilman W. Wilson Goode Jr., issued a letter of apology to Goode yesterday for holding up signs during a......

The murder trial of Hakeem Bey goes to a Common Pleas Court jury today. Ten minutes into the prosecutor's closing argument yesterday, juror number nine signaled for a break; some heard her say, "I'm scared. I don't think I can do this." She was excused and replaced. The case has been fraught with witness intimidation. Meleanie Hain of Lebanon used to take her holstered Glock 26 handgun everywhere for personal security, but her concealed-weapons......

Thomas Daley, a 45-year old Phoenixville man who owns 16 apartments in Norristown, has been arrested and accused of spying on female tenants. Michelle Obama will make several appearances this week in the Philadelphia area. John McCain spoke yesterday at the Delaware County Courthouse. The new penny, unveiled yesterday morning, was designed partly in Philadelphia. A 52-year-old man was in critical condition after being shot in the Mill Creek section of West Philadelphia last......

Yesterday, local Jewish leaders criticized a poll performed by the Republican Jewish Coalition that targeted 750 Jewish voters in swing states, including 150 in Pennsylvania. It sounds like the thing was a push poll that was attempting to convince voters that Obama is pro-Palestinian and anti-Israel. Authorities issued a warrant yesterday for Dorien Oberlton's arrest in the case of Tuesday's vicious beating of Eric Derrickson in an underground subway concourse. Several witnesses came forward to......

What’s new and/or interesting in TV this week. Ocean of Fear: Worst Shark Attack Ever (Tue, 8PM-9PM, Discovery) It’s Shark Week on Discovery Channel, meaning that you can expect a lot of shows based upon people getting killed or nearly killed by Great White sharks. If this is your sort of thing, and you can only catch one show, this would have to be it. Remember in Jaws where the old sea captain tells the......

Proofreading Philly tries to capture typos, wordos, and all other kinds of grammatical mistakes that we see around the city. But we need your help! Email photos to us from your computer or your phone, and show the city that you care about good grammar. Phillyist Ross sent this video to us a few days ago. We thought it was an idea for the daily video post, until we got about thirty seconds in –......

Laurel Hill Cemetery is haunted - according to South Jersey Paranormal Research, anyway. 2,350 unionized janitors and maintenance workers who clean Center City buildings could strike at midnight tonight when their contracts expire, unless they come to an agreement with management before then. Talks are continuing, so we'll see what happens... Around 12:50AM Saturday morning in Springfield Township, Delaware County, an 18-year-old recent Springfield High School graduate driving a 2004 Ford Mustang Cobra struck......

Fox 29 anchor and reporter Tom Burlington has been suspended from his duties at the station according to Philadelphia Daily News columnist Dan Gross. The incident appears to have happened during a story meeting about NAACP Philadelphia Youth Council holding a mock funeral last Saturday for the N-word at Dobbins High School, which "offended staffers of all races." The suspension began last Friday, although no reason for the suspension was given. We should also note......

ABC 6’s Action News #1 yet again, CBS 3 getting stronger As expected the awful, retro-themed, over-sensational Action News on ABC 6 has dominated the November sweeps ratings once again. So we look at the real horse race for number two instead of theorizing why ABC 6 is constantly first in the ratings. (Subliminal messages in the music? The mesmerizing quality of Jim Gardner’s wig?) TV Spy reports that in the 11 p.m. race for......

Election night, NBC 10 had the best broadcast locally, supplying the right mix of live coverage, analysis and discussion, as seen on both its own newscast, and the one it produces for WPHL. Admittedly, Tim Lake seems like he should be hosting Good Day Tampa Bay or some late night infomercial rather than a newscast. Also, there is something disconcerting about Renee Chenault-Fattah anchoring election coverage, seeing as how her husband is U.S. Congressman......

Please welcome another new author to our team, G. W. Bridge, whose diverse talents include reviewing pizza places, and covering local news items, as he does below. Phillyist has caught wind of rumors about a major shakeup at NBC 10, via Laura Nachman’s Bucks County Courier Times column on Tuesday. The shakeup is thought to be related to NBC’s budget cutbacks announced last week. Locally, it looks like we'll have solo anchors focusing on specific......
