    Yo, Philly in the News

  • Former Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge is eyeing the Senate sources say. Ridge would run against new Democrat Arlen Specter.
  • The election is getting closer, which means it's time for some voter intimidation! "An anonymous flier circulating in African-American neighborhoods in North and West Philadelphia states that voters who are facing outstanding arrest warrants or who have unpaid traffic tickets may be arrested at the polls on Election Day." This is false.
  • Latrice Bryant, chief legislative aide to Philadelphia City Councilman W. Wilson Goode Jr., issued a letter of apology to Goode yesterday for holding up signs during a recent City Council meeting accusing Fox29, and reporter Jeff Cole, of being racist. She has not, however, apologized to Cole or Fox29, and in fact she may be planning to sue them.
  • Meleanie Hain of Lebanon used to take her holstered Glock 26 handgun everywhere for personal security, but her concealed-weapons permit was revoked after other parents complained about seeing her carrying the loaded gun at her 5-year-old daughter's soccer game. She's fighting the revocation.
  • Michelle Obama will make several appearances this week in the Philadelphia area. John McCain spoke yesterday at the Delaware County Courthouse.
  • Authorities issued a warrant yesterday for Dorien Oberlton's arrest in the case of Tuesday's vicious beating of Eric Derrickson in an underground subway concourse. Several witnesses came forward to identify Oberlton, who apparently had a long-standing grudge against Derrickson for supposedly stealing his girl.
  • What’s new and/or interesting in TV this week.

The world is talking about it, so you should probably check it out—even though it's not especially fun to watch.

    Updated. See below.

On Sunday March 30th at 10:30 p.m., FOX 29 will be airing a half-hour long special called Phillies Season Opener: Play Ball hosted by Don Tollefson. (See Phillyist's interview of Don here.)

Phillyist Ross sent this video to us a few days ago. We thought it was an idea for the daily video post, until we got about thirty seconds in – and then we saw that he was actually sending a Proofreading Philly submission.

  • 2,350 unionized janitors and maintenance workers who clean Center City buildings could strike at midnight tonight when their contracts expire, unless they come to an agreement with management before then. Talks are continuing, so we'll see what happens...
  • Fox 29 anchor and reporter Tom Burlington has been suspended from his duties at the station according to Philadelphia Daily News columnist Dan Gross. The incident appears to have happened during a story meeting about NAACP Philadelphia Youth Council holding a mock funeral last Saturday for the N-word at Dobbins High School, which "offended staffers of all races." The suspension began last Friday, although no reason for the suspension was given. We should also note that his station-sponsored blog is completely empty. Having the talent blog is mandated by the Fox Television Station Group, so we are guessing the station may have shut it down during the suspension.

ABC 6’s Action News #1 yet again, CBS 3 getting stronger

Election night, NBC 10 had the best broadcast locally, supplying the right mix of live coverage, analysis and discussion, as seen on both its own newscast, and the one it produces for WPHL. Admittedly, Tim Lake seems like he should be hosting Good Day Tampa Bay or some late night infomercial rather than a newscast. Also, there is something disconcerting about Renee Chenault-Fattah anchoring election coverage, seeing as how her husband is U.S. Congressman Chakah Fattah. It has the appearance of something not-quite-kosher, but hey, this is Pennsylvania politics, where pork is not a four letter word. And anyway these are only a few minor complaints about some informative and insightful coverage.
