Greensgrown Goes Whole Hog

Phillyist is a huge fan of Greensgrow, so much so that we've mentioned them bunches and bunches before, but just in case you can't place the name (or tear yourself away from this stellar article) we'll remind you of Greensgrow's fantastic mission. Dedicated to growing fresh veggies and fruits here in our fair city, making use of an otherwise barren super fund site, importing delicious local artisan groceries, and supplying ALL your urban gardening needs, Greensgrow provides a small oasis of agricultural calm in Fishtown.

Yo, Philly in the News

  • Archaeologists in Fishtown have uncovered 25,000 artifacts from a property once owned by butcher Godfrey Remer. In pits that were used as dumpsters, various items were found including: a painted peralware bowl from England, a chamber pot, a piece of a flute-like recorder.
  • Foodsday Tuesday: Another Restaurant Week

First came Center City Restaurant Week. Then came South Jersey Restaurant Week. Legal drama ensued between the two Restaurant Weeks. And when that was done, even more legal drama ensued, this time kept within South Jersey. But really, all we want is a drama-free, food-filled Restaurant Week. Something reflective of our more laid-back temperament. Maybe something new, or at least someplace that doesn't generally get a whole lot of attention. Thanks to the New Kensington Community Development Corporation and Phoodie.info, our wish has been granted in the form of the Riverward Restaurant Week, which runs from this Friday, May 1, to next Wednesday, May 6. (Yes, the timing of the restaurant "week" to span two weeks and not run a complete week is a little odd, but apparently this was due to some scheduling issues.)

Before we delve into the review, your Phillyist would be remiss if we didn't tell you about how we almost didn't get into this show Saturday night. Since the show was sold out (seriously), we knew it was important to get like double-confirmation that we were on the press list or else it was no-dice-see-ya-later time. Which we did, since we're cool thorough obsessively meticulous like that.

Word of the day: Mockstars. A fascinating look at the latest trend in tribute bands, that of recreating the experience along with the music.

God Bless John Oates. And his 'stache.

Fascinating profile of local performer Stoya. Don't worry, we know you know who she is.

The Inquirer this morning ran an interesting piece about the latest controversy swirling around the proposed SugarHouse casino site on the Delaware River, on the border of Northern Liberties and Fishtown. It seems that the foundations of Batchelor's Hall, a building of some historical import (see Chapter 69 here), have been excavated beneath the casino's billboard on Delaware Avenue near Frankford. Needless to say, historians and SugarHouse are at-odds about what this discovery means. More on this story as it develops.

  • A private eye testified yesterday that Fumo hired him to snoop on Ed Rendell, a long string of political enemies, his own son, an ex-girlfriend, a former wife, and two topless dancers.

  • At a defendant's sentencing hearing yesterday in a robbery and attempted rape case, the woman who had been the victim of the attack began hyperventilating in court and then collapsed in an anteroom. She was taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and later released. The defendant was given the maximum sentence of 20 to 40 years in state prison.
  • Philly.com has detailed coverage of the murder of Philadelphia Police Officer Patrick McDonald and its affect on the community.
  • Proofreading Philly tries to capture typos, wordos, and all other kinds of grammatical mistakes that we see around the city. But we need your help! Email photos to us from your computer or your phone, and show the city that you care about good grammar.

It’s PW’s time for a fall guide, and they got lots of stuff for you on the cheap. But don’t expect any PA favors.

  • A couple of unrelated incidents involving firearms took place early yesterday morning in Philadelphia. In the first incident, a retired Philly cop working as a pizza delivery man was accosted by three teenagers, one of whom pointed a gun at him while the other two went through his pockets. But the retired cop was able to reach into his pocket and pull out a semiautomatic Glock, which he had a permit to carry. He shot the boy with the gun once in the chest, killing him. The other two would-be robbers ran off. The deliveryman will most likely not be charged in the incident. A few hours later, officers approaching a group of robbery suspects thought they saw a gun in one of the suspects' waistbands and told him to freeze. He reached for the weapon and one of the officers fired his gun into the sidewalk, causing bullet fragments to strike the 17-year-old suspect. He's in stable condition, and a 14-year-old was also apprehended, but the third suspect ran off.
  • The summer keeps slipping away, and with it opportunities for leisurely outdoors activities. Menupages reminds us that summer is the time for picnics, and that it's not too late to enjoy meals al fresco on a blanket. They'll be posting weekly on local parks that are ideal dining rooms; first up is Penn Treaty Park, which gets a thumbs up. We are embarrassed to say we were totally unfamiliar; seems like other folks are too, since it remains at least "somewhat uncrowded." Not for long!

Our own Eric Smith found this sign in Fishtown, where they're so friendly that the whole community gets together and shares one breakfast pastry.

  • The Inquirer investigates the lasting effects of the shooting death of 33-year-old Moroccan-born Ouadii Souliman. He was gunned down at the door Al Aqsa Mosque on the border between Northern Liberties and Fishtown two Sundays ago as he awaited the dawn call to prayer; the apparent motive was robbery.

  • We're starting to lose track of who stands where on the whole casino issue. Last we checked, Michael was pretty firmly against it. But this week, a Michael aide speaking to a group of pro-casino Fishtown residents (yes, apparently, contrary to what most of the local media would have you believe, there are pro-casino residents out there) said that Michael was moving cautiously forward on the project.
