What's new and/or interesting on TV this week.
Every Tuesday and Thursday, we'll be posting events that are going on sale during the current week. This Thursday post only collects the latest announcements, so definitely check the Tuesday post for any you may have missed.
At some point last week, while killing a few minutes' time before going to lunch, I heard about a new establishment in Ross's neighborhood: The Belgian Café, owned by Monk's owners Tom Peters and Fergus "Fergie" Carey (also of Fergie's Pub, a Phillyist fave), in the old Tavern on the Green location at 21st and Green. We tried to head over for dinner on Saturday night, but were thwarted by the already burgeoning crowds, and decided to try our luck at brunch the next morning, after a short blurb in the Inky told us that they'd begun serving the meal over the weekend.

Phillyist has a confession to make: We have never made it through James Joyce's Ulysses. Not even a little. We've tried. Oh, how we've tried. But though we've failed more times than we'd like to admit, we console ourselves that those with better minds have thrown their hands up in disgust and screamed, "Okay I get it! It's the *&%*#$ Odyssey! Jesus, at least Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man was under 200 pages!"
Tonight, Rooney is opening for Fergie's Verizon Wireless VIP Tour at the Electric Factory. Unfortunately you can't buy tickets to this show, but you can actually WIN tickets at various places around town. We've never heard of an artist doing an all-promotional concert. Interesting. Fergie must be getting paid pretty good from Verizon to promote the hell out of their products. We found out through a Fergie's MySpace bulletin that you can get tickets....

We've already told you they're attractive. If you read the interview with frontman Patrick Halloran, you know that they're funny. And tonight, there's another chance to catch Ceann live. Pat tells us that they've been working on a new album, so even if you've caught Ceann before, you can expect to hear some tunes that you haven't heard before—and if you haven't caught Ceann before, you can just expect to have a lot of fun.
...WTF: There are no words... (Via The Superficial. It was in Whiz earlier this week, but it bears repeating. And seriously, if you only click on one link in this week's round-up, make this the one.)
As you contemplate the luck of the Irish and your hangover this weekend (Erin Express Ho!), consider stopping by Fergie's Pub on Sunday evening from 4-7 pm. They'll be hosting a benefit for poet Frank Sherlock. Frank was rushed to the hospital on January 22nd with what turned out to be a bad case of meningitis, requiring emergency surgery. Since poetry doesn't often come with health insurance, and Frank was in a two-month window of not having coverage, his friends are uniting to ease some of the burden with an Emergency Fund to offset his medical costs.
I have a crush… on a song. This is actually a common occurrence in my life. I love music. I have music playing at all times. I cannot be in my apartment without it on. I can’t drive without music (or be driven somewhere without it). Even when I hate the CD we have to listen to at work, I want it on. This need, coupled with my innate neuroses, means that I often find songs I just can’t stop listening to.

Patrick Halloran of Ceann

Having received lots of IRL feedback about what I wrote last week, I feel compelled to address a few points that were brought up. Being an only child, I also feel compelled to prove each of them entirely wrong.
Philly's a great town for live music. We get almost all of the big national tours. We have several large concert-friendly venues when other cities are lucky to even have one. And there are a ton of smaller bars and clubs where smaller and local acts have the opportunity to play. These can range from the upstairs at Fergie's Pub to significantly larger standing-room venues like the TLA or the Electric Factory. And it's these standing-room venues, small or large, that I'd like to talk about today.

As a lead-in to tomorrow’s Bloomsday Celebration, literati will be taking up a pub crawl in Joyce’s honor. The show gets rolling at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Fergie’s Pub (1214 Sansom Street), then continues with an Irish bar tour to McGillin’s (1310 Drury Street), Irish Pub (1123 Walnut Street) and Fadó (1500 Locust Street). If you don’t know your Ulysses from your Odyssey and are going to meet some book folks tonight, we suggestion you join in the fun at McGillin’s since Fergie’s will host a Joyce-themed discussion.

Phillyist has to admit, we had to gag our inner fan girl and stick her in the closet in order to compose this post. She's convinced if we put the word out that author Neil Gaiman (squueeeeee!) will be speaking at Temple University's Mitten Hall (1913 North Broad Street) at 8PM on Thursday as part of their Poet and Writers Series, that there would be a sort of fantasy lovers stampede that would prevent her from getting to see him speak. I assured her that there's likely enough Gaiman goodness to go around. For the love our comics, please don't prove us wrong.
If you have a hankering to rub shoulders with the hoi polloi of Philadelphia blogger society, it's your lucky day: the Philly Bloggers' Meetup is tomorrow, Saturday, January 21.
Alright, ladies and gentleman; we know it's cold outside. We know it's very tempting to stay home, drink hot chocolate, turn the heat up and bask in the cold UV glow on the Internet. And whereas surfing the world wide web might be the highlight of our weekend (ours is a sad, sad, life) some of you might want to put down the mouse, put on your coat, and make your way to Fergie's Pub (1214 Sansom Street) on Saturday at 3PM for the monthly Philly Bloggers's Meetup. Philly Future Event Czar (and Meetup organizer) Blankbaby promises it'll be "a hoot." And if not, you can spend your time trying to determine whether it's better blogger meetup ettiquette to introduce yourself with your real name, your blog's name, your online name, or just your URL.
Blogging is a strange animal. It's an extremely social activity, encouraging the free exchange of ideas across borders through self-publishing, link sharing and comment capability. Conversely - it's a hermit-like activity - done surreptiously in offices (for shame!) or at home, late at night and in our pajamas (or is it in our Open Source? We're not sure anymore).
