There aren't many performers who are surer bets to be worth the money you put down to see them than Eric Hutchinson (MySpace). Hutchinson is engaging, comedic, affable and, oh yeah, talented. Really freakin' talented. And at $12 (or $15 if you waited til the day of the show), his concert at the North Star this past Sunday was an absolute bargain.

It's no secret that we love Eric Hutchinson (MySpace). And the more time passes, the more people seem to join us in that love. Eric's killer 2007 album, .

Heading into the Eric Hutchinson (MySpace) show at World Cafe Live, we pretty much knew what to expect from Eric: good banter, strong performance, and a bit of cheekiness that makes you wonder how much of it is shtick and how much is actual ego. It's all part of Eric Hutchinson's charm. We were expecting him to put a smile on our faces. What we didn't expect was how badly we'd need that smile because of the inauspicious start our evening at WCL had gotten off to.

Singer-songwriter and Internet phenom Eric Hutchinson

) has such a big under-age following that The Troc, whose balcony we always count on as a place of over-21 refuge, opened the upstairs to all of the teenagers who deigned to go up. I have a feeling that if I die and go to hell, it will be something like that.

We recently described Eric Hutchinson as sounding a little like a lot of other artists while still having his own unique place in today's music. Well tonight at the Electric Factory, we'll be checking out a band that we can say the same thing about: The Honorary Title. We got a hold of their and we officially jumped on board.

- concert to get us out of this funk. So thank you thank you thank you to Eric Hutchinson and Matt Duke for giving us that show.

We'd heard Matt Duke's name before (like when Phillyist Meghan's sister covered him for us), but this Phillyist's first encounter with the young Jersey-bred singer-songwriter was a few months ago at the WXPN-hosted Philly Local Lonely Hearts Club Band. Duke, in a pair of crazy patchwork-embellished stovepipe pants (each leg was probably wider than his whole body – you can kind of see them here), completely stole the stage with his performance of "When I'm 64." We left the World Cafe Live that night sure of two things: that we'd had an awesome time, and that we needed to see more of Matt Duke.
