  • Apparently one of the key witnesses against Vincent Fumo in his corruption trial will be his own son-in-law. In the hopes of keeping the trial from running overlong, the judge in the case has ordered prosecutors and defense attorneys to pare down their witness lists.
  • A man outside at a New Year's party in East Germantown, confronted by police for firing his gun into the air, turned the gun on the officers, and was in turn fired upon. Although neither police nor the gunman were hurt, three people inside the house where the party was going on were struck by stray bullets. A similar incident happened only ten minutes later in North Philadelphia. Police asked men to surrender their weapons, and instead they fled and one turned his gun on the officers, and was subsequently shot in the ankle. In all, three were arrested and four injured.
  • Meanwhile, the Ada H. Lewis Middle School in East Germantown might be voted closed on June 20th by the School Reform Commission, due to declining enrollment and a $38 million repair estimate. But parents and teachers are fighting to keep the school open, especially since it sounds pretty clear that $38 million is a ridiculously inflated number.
  • Philadelphia corrections officer Christopher Davidson has been arrested after going on a crazy rampage on an ATV in East Germantown on Tuesday evening. He drove all over a playing field, as well as nearby sidewalks and streets, nearly crashing into numerous vehicles and nearly running over numerous people. The ATV finally stopped after slamming into a police wagon and flipping several times, but that wasn't the end of the chase; police had to continue chasing Davidson on foot before finally wrestling a handgun away from him and taking him into custody. The article doesn't mention it, but... we're betting he was on something.
  • A U Penn criminologist and three colleagues have built a computer model for predicting which existing offenders are most likely to commit murder. They're going to turn it into a piece of software and deliver it to the probation department next year, where clinical trials will begin in the spring. The best part is, the project is funded by a private grant, and the software is in the public domain, so the city gets it for free. Nice!
  • Of course, there are also more direct ways of dealing with gun violence, as one 23-year-old armed robber learned when he walked into Gomez Grocery in East Germantown on Sunday. He tried to stick up the place, but one of the customers, a 66-year-old man named Thomas Santana, grabbed him from behind in a bear hug, and the store owner helped Santana wrestle the guy to the ground. The gunman managed to fire off a few shots, but only succeeded in shooting himself in the head. He was finally subdued and the gun taken away from him after Santana smashed him four times in the head with a nearby jar of Mott's applesauce. Dude, that's hardcore.
