Jason Forrest is pretty clearly a music junkie. He used to record, confusingly enough, under the name Donna Summer (although, don't worry, there was indeed a real Donna Summer; she wasn't just an elaborate conspiratorial creation of the record companies, so you can stop thinking that right now, you paranoid weirdo), so she may have had some influence on him, first off. (The decade of her heyday certainly did, as the website for his self-owned label, Cock Rock Disco, is smothered in '70s era photos and style.) And his latest album, Shamelessly Exciting, features samples from artists as diverse as The Ramones, Steely Dan, Yes, Genesis, and Blood Sweat & Tears - and those are just the ones we recognized. All of this wildly different music is sometimes layered over with fresh performances (the disc features collaborations with contemporary acts like Laura Cantrell), then chopped and pasted and molded into something entirely new, and incredibly rocking - an exhilarating postmodern fusion that may indeed be the future of music, or at least the music of the future.

Attention all Moms & Dads: if you thought you had to hand in your dancing shoes once you began bronzing those of your offspring, think again. The first Sunday of every month is Baby Loves Disco at Fluid (613 S. 4th Street) - where a DJ will spin for you and your little ones in a smoke-free, child-friendly environment from 2-5pm. Not only will you be able to get your groove on to some grown-up music from the 70s & 80s...but when your kid reaches the terrible teens and complains you never let them do anything cool, you can say, "Are you kidding? I took you clubbing when you were !" Baby Loves Disco is $8 per person, or $30 for a family (including 2 adults and up to 3 children). You and your toddlers can next shake what your mammas gave you on Sunday the 4th.

The 11th Annual Philadelphia International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival opens today with a plethora of new films that are funny, poignant, campy, and inspirational. Props to Philly's vibrant film community for ensuring a place for independent film of all kinds in our fair city. The in-depth character studies and universal themes of love, hope and identity in the PIGLFF films are sure to make even the most curmudgeonly dates whisper, "pass the tissues, please."
The festival's wide variety of great films mean there's something for everyone - of course, with this many movies, it can be tough to sort out the best ones. Here are a few previews, complete with suggestions on who and what to bring.
A few FYIs:
- Featured films (aka "Centerpiece Screenings"), movies with good buzz, and special events tend to sell out quickly, so buy your tickets in advance.
- Check the festival website - there are often last-minute venue and time changes.
- If you can't get into the film you want, just pick another one! No matter what you choose, you'll be supporting great independent film in Philadelphia.

Info: Sunday, July 17, The Great Plaza at Penn's Landing. Barbarella costume contest (with prizes from TLA video) begins at 8:45, movie follows shortly thereafter. FREE.
