The Sixers are trying to keep up the home court magic after trashing the Milwaukee Bucks Wednesday (112-69), by beating the Orlando Magic tonight at 7PM at the Wach (get tickets or watch here).

Sorry there was no Eagles Diary last week. I turned on the channel the game was supposed to be on, saw a team in a blue-and-yellow get up that a Division Nine college football team wouldn’t wear and assumed that the game got canceled. But anyway, I was wrong. The game took place and the Eagles actually scored 56 points and obliterated the Detroit Lions. So I had high hopes for the Eagles latest square-off against the hated New York Giants. And I was not disappointed. Because the Eagles gave me plenty to rag on. So back by popular demand (or at least by demand of my editors), here is the minute-by-minute account of last night’s Eagles flop.

June 17 -The Phillies lost the last game of their series with the Detroit Tigers, 7-4. Not only did the Phillies lose the series, but gave away yet another game that they should have won. Phillies pitcher Adam Eaton continued his string of quality starts, and pitched and hit well enough to win, leaving the game with a 3-1 lead, and coming up with two hits on the day. Yet, it’s the same story on a different day with different relievers. Geoff Geary was unable to retire any of the batters he had faced, and Yoel Hernandez gave up 3 more runs, adding up to a five-run inning for the Tigers.

The Second Coming wasn’t supposed to be like this. On his return to Philadelphia, the Flyers seemed set to dominate the league. Prior to the NHL returning from the 2004-2005 season, Bob Clarke assembled what had appeared to be a sure Cup contender. Former 30-plus goal scorer Mike Knuble was added along with versatile forward Turner Stevenson. The signing of massive and proven defensemen Mike Rathje and Derian Hatcher was announced on the same day in early August ’05. We seemed set for a title run. But, after a somewhat inspired early season, the level of play dropped off dramatically through March and April, prior to the team being absolutely embarrassed by the Buffalo Sabres in a first round playoff loss. Knuble proved to be the only one of those big ’05 additions that has had a lasting impact. Rathje and Hatcher are too slow to be effective in the speedier NHL of today, and Stevenson was lost last season after continuous hip problems (Rathje is currently out indefinitely with Piriformis Syndrome, which is described as condition that causes backside pain). Besides having slow footed defensemen, the Flyers have sorely missed Stevenson as his two way play was invaluable on the penalty kill and in close game situations. Additionally he demonstrated the tireless work effort that this team currently lacks.

Don't mind us. We had a whole post set to go about how today was a wacky, wacky day for football injuries, with Marques Colston, Chad Johnson, Reggie Bush, Brett Favre and Donovan McNabb all injured, however slightly, at one point or another in their respective games.

  • We're pleased to note that neighboring town Camden is officially no longer America's Most Dangerous City. In fact, it sounds like the new number one is likely to be nowhere near us - it'll probably be St. Louis or Detroit.
  • Merial, the makers of Heartguard Plus, recently conducted a survey of their 15 biggest markets, asking folks in each area how good they thought local dog-owners were about picking up after their pooches (don't worry, the respondents included both dog-owners and non-dog-owners alike, for fairness). The cities were then ranked from least to most responsible. The results are as follows:

The Philadelphia 76ers lost their season opener last night to the Milwaukee Bucks, 117-108 in overtime. The Sixers seemed to have the game locked up. They were up 7 points on the Bucks with only 1:07 left in the fourth quarter. Andre Igoudala, however, would foul out of the game, leaving the Sixers weaker on their defensive end. A Michael Redd three-pointer with a little over a second remaining tied the game and sent the game to OT, where the Bucks capitalized on their momentum and sealed the victory.

Art Spiegelman, author and artist behind the ground-breaking, best-selling, Pulitzer Prize winning graphic novel , will be speaking about the history of comics and their changing role in society and popular culture. (And, we hope, explaining why he insists on spelling the word "comics" as "comix." Phillyist is a fan of Speigelman and has great respect for him as a storyteller and innovator - but we're not altogether sure that his Pulitzer gives him the right to change the spellings of words willy-nilly.) The program starts at 8PM, and costs $8 ($5 for students).

Once again, the city of Philadelphia has let me down. For yet another time, my hopes were raised, only to be shattered. This time it wasn’t the Phillies or Eagles. It wasn’t even a sports team. No, this time I’m let down by Live 8. The riots that would occur with 1 million people just never panned out. The excess port-a-potty sewage flooding the street? Not so much. I was looking forward to a good old fashioned mob scene this weekend, and what did I get? Woodstock 2005. All peace, love and harmony. No large scale arrests? This comes from a city that had to install a court in Veterans Stadium. I thought for sure we were really going to step up this time, finally make some news for ourselves. I thought maybe the Philadelphia police might gather people up in nets like the NYPD did at last years' Republican National Convention. But no! They acted responsibly. And how about overturning some cars, like Detroit did after the Tigers won the World Series in the 80’s? Not a one. The best we get is a bunch of trash on the Parkway. So once again Philadelphia gets no national recognition. Is there a draft pick somewhere we can boo?
