This weekend there are several cool dance events going down, most of them on the cheap. We were going to front-load (dance-load?) Frugal today, but then thought it might be better to devote a little more space to each. Besides, with all this slushiness, wouldn't you rather watch other people move than do so yourself? If you need a little something tomorrow afternoon to make you forget about said slush, consider heading over to the......

Mayor Nutter has cut taxpayer-funded nonprofit Philadelphia Safe and Sound's funding by $21 million, and City Council's majority leader said she would call today for hearings to look into how Safe and Sound conducts its business. The funding cuts will result in the closing of ten school-based community centers; the termination of a parent-truancy program; and the elimination of many after-school programs. As the head of one after-school program put it, "It's a fiasco."......

Phillyist, like untold thousands in the Delaware Valley, resolved to be more active this year. If you’re one of those thousands and are looking for a place to start, consider combining it with that other favorite resolution, volunteering in the community. Back On My Feet running club lets you do just that: you’ll run in Center City with homeless men from local shelters. It may seem odd at first glance, but the non-profit is committed......

You may have caught Walt Hunter’s report about sleeping Wackenhut security guards at the Peach Bottom Nuclear Power Plant in York County on CBS 3 (KYW) on Tuesday. Well that report was based on a three month investigation by Scott Weinberger from CBS 2 (WCBS) in New York, which is the sister station for CBS 3 in New York. The thing is that Hunter’s piece, which used video and interviews conducted by Weinberger, didn’t mention......

Psst. Rumor is, Billy Penn will soon be enclosed in scaffolding again for waterproofing. It was announced yesterday that a company called Pacifica Ventures would be opening a $75 million "entertainment production facility" (read: film studio) in the Delaware Valley by the fall of 2008 - and it's all thanks to our new tax-incentive package for filmmakers. "Pacifica is looking at sites in Bucks, Delaware and Philadelphia Counties for a 500,000-square-foot facility." Yesterday the......

Restaurateur Susanna Foo has completed her six-month probation and 50-plus hours of community service, which she received for supposedly striking an officer of the Philadelphia Parking Authority, something she still claims she didn't do. About 1:30AM yesterday morning a woman died when she crashed her car into the back of a stationary PennDot dump truck in a construction zone on northbound I-95 near the Chichester Avenue exit. Northbound traffic was detoured until the lanes were......

A mother who had been barred from contact with her son for being physically abusive towards him managed to sign him out of his elementary school on Tuesday and police are now searching for her and the boy. The boy is seven years old and asthmatic. Call Southwest Detectives at 215-686-3183 if you have any information. "A recently completed 'citizens' inspection' of a third of the 140 parks operated by the Fairmount Park Commission and......

Wandering through Liberty Place this Saturday afternoon, Phillyist came across the statue pictured to the right, as well as a bunch of others created from canned goods. Turns out Philadelphia's architecture and construction communities teamed up to sponsor Canstruction, a national charity, which was created by the Society for Design Administration. This is the first annual installment of this in Philadelphia, and it was done to benefit Philabundance. You can visit the exhibit from......

The Philadelphia Inquirer has some more details about the madness that went down at West Philly High on Monday, as well as fall-out over the removal of the school's principal last week. Meanwhile, West Philly High isn't the only Philadelphia school experiencing violence and insanity; the Abigail Vare Public School on Moyamensing Avenue and Morris Street in South Philly went into lockdown Monday afternoon after a shooting occurred at a basketball court across the street.......

Our next mayor might not have a bachelor's degree. This would make him a rarity amongst the current mayors of the largest cities in America, and even a rarity amongst past mayors of Philadelphia, at least since the '50s. However, it would put him in good company with four-fifths of the city's adult population. So, the question is, does it matter? Now it's coming out that Reid's sons have gotten into traffic accidents before and......

NBC 10 election coverage Kudos to NBC 10 for airing a live election special Monday night dealing with the issues and candidates in the Delaware Valley. Steve Highsmith handles things like this very well, but co-anchor Tim Lake seemed like a lightweight sitting next to him. Among the highlights: conservative talk show host Michael Smerconish and Democratic analyst Rob McCord provided a nice right/left debate on some issues and tactics. WCAU really did their......

The news has just broken that Philadelphia has been eliminated from contention to host the 2016 Summer Olympics. The three cities that did make the cut were Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Houston was the other city eliminated of the five that were under consideration by the United States Olympic Committee. This is bad news, of course, and for a few reasons. First, it would have been totally awesome to see the Olympics......

Dear Philadelphia: Happy Holidays! That’s right, we said it. Because it’s the holiday season, goddammit. We’re talking about all the holidays that happen between the last Thursday in November and the first day of January. Even the ones you haven’t heard of. Bill O’Reilly. But we digress. The thing that we here at Phillyist like so much about the holidays is how darn nice everyone is. Store clerks are especially helpful, bosses are extra......

By Jen A. Miller Check out World Cafe Live on Wednesday, November 30 for a potpourri the Delaware Valley's best local performers. Bruce Torres , who you might know as the super cool guy who hosts WCL's Monday night open mike, is headlining downstairs -- and rightfully so. He's a dynamo singer songwriter and was recently named "one to watch" by Hooters magazine (and yes, they do have a magazine, and yes, you can......
