It'll probably be pouring tonight, but so what? The temperatures are on the rise, Daylight Savings Time starts again on Sunday, and it's time to get this Spring started! Where better than at First Friday? Here are our top three picks. Khmer Art Gallery & Museum, home of a millennium's worth of Cambodian art, welcomes an exhibition of the work of local photographer Angie Campano. The two-month exhibition, opening tonight, features photographs she took while......

Remember those makeshift stables in Strawberry Mansion that animal cruelty investigators raided yesterday? Well, the owners of about 40 of the horses living there removed their animals yesterday, as ordered. About 20 more horses were allowed to stay in three garages on Fletcher Street near 27th that had been made into stables while owners of those properties made repairs. The other structures will be bulldozed today. Yesterday, City Council gave final approval to a lease......

Highway Patrol Officers were passing a house on Jefferson Street near 26th on Friday night when they spotted a man who matched the description of someone who had robbed and shot another man earlier that night. When they arrested him, they discovered that the house had a cache of drugs, money, and weapons, including seven loaded handguns, an AK-47 assault rifle, a shotgun, two Kevlar vests, $3,000 in cash, and $25,000 worth of cocaine. In......

Monday challenges the average human to perform incredible feats of bravery and strength every week. It is the Goliath to our David, the Microsoft to our Yahoo!, the [insert viable presidential candidate here] to our Ron Paul. We do not choose it – it chooses us. Then it abuses us. Degrades us. Makes us to feel as if our feelings, if they exist at all, don't actually matter. Yes, we will say it, because......

Dear YouTube: There's so much about you to love. From Tay Zonday to Samwell to He Man Sings to Liam Kyle Sullivan to Barats and Bereta (that's their newest video on the right) to Eepy Bird to the Numa Numa kid to Chad Vader to, um, stuff like this, you have given me hours upon hours of entertainment since your launch in February of 2005. I've spent countless nights staying up until four in the......

I'm a bit of an Anglophile. I love British just-about-everything, except for the food. But I especially love British humor. And after attending and enjoying a staged reading of Roy Smiles' Ying Tong last spring, I figured I'd really love the fully-mounted production at The Wilma Theater. I never thought I'd say this about any production, ever, but I think I liked the staged reading better. There was something charming about the bare-bones production......

Entering the empty stage, David Ford began to shake his maracas into the microphone. He stepped away and lowered the maracas, but, as if it was somehow coming from behind the scenes, the sound continued to echo. He then briefly vocalized into the mic and -- same as the maracas -- after the vocalization was over, it eerily continued. At this point, hushed murmurs throughout the crowd could be heard: "What is he doing?" "How......

A tall, icy glass of our favorite internet junk, just for you. The concept of controlling a computer and/or a video game with only your mind has been around for a long time, and lately it's been getting closer and closer to reality. Now it looks like the reality is finally here: a neuro-headset which interprets the interaction of neurons in the brain and sends them wirelessly to a USB dongle connected to your computer......

Some of you have off today. Others, not so much. In fairness, we will restrict today's list of things you should do to convince yourself that you are engaged and in tune with your city, if not the rest of your life, to things that fall into the "after work" category. LOST BOYS OF SUDAN STORYTELLING AT THE WHITE DOG CAFE Sudan's "Lost Boys" - children forced to become soldiers in the humanitarian nightmare......

Typically, theatre is escapist. We go to be entertained, to see the lives of others played out for a few hours, to leave satisfied. What we are viewing is fantasy, not reality. Once in a while, though, theatre challenges us, and we find ourselves in the audience not, it feels, watching a play, but rather watching the very real lives of very real people having very real conversations and doing very real things. It's......

A steaming hot pile of our favorite things from around the internets. We've seen examples of humorous rejected Star Wars merchandise before, but... here's some more! Always funny! Plus, we totally want that Jabba the Hutt beanbag chair. The first photo from the set of G.I. Joe is... a guy talking on a phone. Still, kind of vaguely exciting. If you would have told this Phillyist this morning that he'd be interested in a movie......

The Inquirer takes a close look at Mayor Nutter's first budget proposal. The subtitle of the article is: "The $3.98 billion plan seeks bonds for pensions and a kitty for unions." Awww, that's nice! He's getting a kitty for the unions! We hope it's a cute kitty. David C. Sicoli, a Philadelphia priest with "a long history of abusive and manipulative relationships with adolescents," according to a grand jury report, has finally been defrocked by......

The shapeless dough of the internet, formed into tasty pellets and baked to perfection, just for you. David Murray, who'd been set to star as Destro in the upcoming G.I. Joe movie, apparently had some troubles with his Visa, and couldn't make it into the States in time for the start of shooting. So now Chris Eccleston will get the role. Which is actually pretty cool. Doctor Destro! Word came out a while back that......

A steaming hot pile of our favorite things from around the internets. The first teaser trailer for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull will be shown in front of The Spiderwick Chronicles when it gets released next weekend. Of course it'll hit the web shortly afterward. Two literary characters and a historical figure walk into a bar... It's not a joke – it's the basic premise of Wittenberg, a world premiere play currently running at the Arden Theatre. Wittenberg is a play for smart people, full of historical and literary references used, often, in very funny ways. Not well-versed on your Elizabethan drama or your Sixteenth Century religious history? Well, you can still enjoy the play, but you won't get......

This week's quote is one we rather like, by none other than David Mamet, who we often don't. It runs in full: "When you come into the theater, you have to be willing to say, 'We're all here to undergo a communion, to find out what the hell is going on in this world.' If you're not willing to say that, what you get is entertainment instead of art, and poor entertainment at that." Now,......

Warning: This whole review is basically a spoiler. Despite its infamy, there are apparently people out there who are still surprised by the "twist" at the end of M. Butterfly, currently being produced by the Philadelphia Theatre Company. These are the same people who are confused by Ru Paul. Please proceed with caution. Let's just get this out of the way, folks. Butterfly in David Henry Hwang's M. Butterfly, just like Dil in The Crying......

Dust off those pens with the big fluffy feathers at the ends: It’s time to play Cyrano. The grandnephew of former Mayor W. Wilson Goode - a 24-year-old named Timothy J. Goode - was shot and killed late Friday by police during what they're describing as a drug bust. Police say Goode pulled a gun on them, and that the weapon has been recovered, but Goode's mother says that's not true and that her son was shot twice in the back. The tapes from surveillance cameras at the scene may be......

What's new and/or interesting in Philly theaters this weekend. Most Likely to Rule: Diva - The 1981 debut film from the director of the more recent Diving Bell and the Butterfly is about a famous opera singer who refuses to be recorded, and the fan who one night sneaks a tape recorder into her performance and tapes her anyway. Eventually the fan and the singer become friends, but there's also a labyrinthine plot involving two......

The saga of CBS 3’s Alycia Lane continues. She has been divorced twice, appeared on Dr. Phil, was romantically linked to WCBS anchor Chris Wragge, and of course infamously sent bikini photos to a married man. All of this seemed to make her one of the darlings of the New York Post’s Page Six column of late. So it is not a shock that she got into some trouble in New York, more specifically in......
