If you read Sunday's Inquirer, you might have seen a story about a psychedelic-looking van that's making its way around the city. If you didn't read Sunday's Inquirer, fear not, because we're giving you a story about a psychedelic-looking van that's making its way around the city. The graffitied 1988 Dodge Ram is the official vehicle of the First Person Story Tour. The Story Tour is an initiative of First Person Arts and Red Tettemer. Its goal: to collect real stories from real Philadelphians. By "real Philadelphians," we truly mean real Philadelphians: musicians, investment bankers, students, psychic advisers, and everything in between. Including kids at the zoo.

This week, Phillyist saw the waters of a landmark fountain run red for a Showtime marketing stunt, the Phils pull ahead, and some serious nostalgia. They also got a chance to review an awesome tribute album, reminded folks to see the King, and appreciated their beautiful skyline.

There was very little else for Londonist to be concerned with when the threat of a Tube strike became a very unpleasant reality. The inconvenience was extreme: there aren't many alternatives to the Tube in London despite the best efforts of the Londonist team to get everyone from A to B. Brighter news came in the form of the first ever female Yeoman Warder, or Beefeater as the position is more commonly known, and several smiles as well as lots of cash were raised by some plucky urban ironing. London is apparently full of lies and whales: one of these things is true. We leave that up to you to figure out.

  • Embattled PA Gaming Control Board Chairman Tad Decker is stepping down, possibly to return to his former law firm, which represents one of the would-be casinos. Insert snide remark about lawyers' ethics here.
  • Don't mind us. We had a whole post set to go about how today was a wacky, wacky day for football injuries, with Marques Colston, Chad Johnson, Reggie Bush, Brett Favre and Donovan McNabb all injured, however slightly, at one point or another in their respective games.

Somehow, the world of -ists managed to make it through the week despite news that Jen & Vince broke up.

It was like a tennis match: Astros up, Phillies up, Astros up, Phillies up. But when the innings ran out, the Astros held onto the lead to beat the Phils, 5-4, dropping the Phils into a first place tie with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

We couldn't let the day pass without noting that legendary Phillies broadcaster Harry Kalas was given the honor of singing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" during the seventh inning stretch of last night's Phillies-Cubs game at Wrigley Field. The Hall of Famer did quite an impressive job, too. He was right on tune throughout the game, and -- like any good broadcaster -- didn't tell the fans who to root, root, root for. Then again, Kalas grew up in the Chicago suburb of Naperville, and told WGN TV during the eighth inning that he grew up listening to Cubs games on the radio.

So the dust has settled. The two biggest moves made by yesterday’s trade deadline were the Phillies sending Bobby Abreu and Cory Lidle to the Yankees, and the Cubs trading out Cy Young Winner Greg Maddux to the Dodgers.

The weeks starts out right when a sucker punch on the field lands Chicagoist in the middle of a Sox/Cubs throwdown and the fists continue to fly in the comments. Despite suburban resident Ms. Pinney's best little try no books will be banned anytime soon and the El is really really gross.

We have a couple announcements for the Style Devotees among you.

The Philadelphia Phillies entered their weekend series needing a sweep of the Washington Nationals to keep hope alive in their Wild Card chase. They got their sweep, but unfortunately, they needed something else: the Cubs to take three of four from the Houston Astros in Texas. While the Cubs were able to take the first two games from the Astros, they dropped the last two games, sending the Phillies home for the winter.

The Philadelphia Phillies will start their final series of the regular series tonight when Corey Lidle takes the mound against the Washington Nationals. The Phillies must sweep the series if they have any hope of making the playoffs. Even if they do that, the Phillies need some help: the Astros have three games remaining at home against the Cubs. If the Phils sweep, the Astros need to lose two of their next three in order for the Phillies to tie. The Astros lost to the Cubs last night, 3-2, pulling the Phillies to within 2 games of the Wild Card leaders.

Every local sports columnist and TV anchor tried to remind us heading into the weekend that the Cincinatti Reds put an end to the Phillies' playoff hopes these past two years. They all seemed dead-on Friday night as the Phillies blew a 6 - 1 lead to fall behind the Reds, 10 - 6. The Phillies, it seems, had blown it again.

Bobby Abreu’s first inning grand slam off of Mark Prior in the 92 degree heat at CBB gave Brett Myers a four run lead, enough room to pitch with a good amount of sloppiness. Myers flirted with disaster, giving up 10 hits to the 30 batters he faced. But luckily for Myers, and for the Phillies, Myers held off the Cubs without giving up one home run, although he did allow five doubles. The Phillies hit three home runs off of Prior, adding a Chase Utley shot in the fifth and a Todd Pratt blast in the fourth. Because the long ball tallies were all courtesy of the Phillies, the Cubs were never able to score more than 2 runs in an inning. Due to the early Phillies lead, Brett Myers could afford to be a little more aggressive to Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez than he otherwise might have been.

David Bell is hitting .251. Bell’s counterpart on the Chicago Cubs, Aramis Ramirez, is hitting .309 with 27 homers. David Bell has 28 homers in the last 3 years. After last night, Chris Mustazza and I are growing frustrated. Bell may be single-handedly bringing down the Phillies season.

Chris and Phil are back again this week to talk about Citizens Bank Park, Jim Thome, and Ugueth Urbina, among other things. This will be Phil's last post for a while, as he's on something he likes to call "vacation." Personally, we just think he doesn't like staying up late for the Phils' west coast swing.
