Parking

If you need to take a quick break from the bustle of Center City, Louis I. Kahn Memorial Park is for you. It's a small park, less than an acre in size, that takes up the Northwest corner of 11th and Pine Streets. Known as a "concrete park" because, well, there's no lawn, only paving, the park has a magnificent garden and fountain along its innermost edge. Trees dot the landscape, providing shade and making the park on a hot day a good ten degrees cooler than the sidewalk surrounding it. Benches and small tables (perfect for playing chess or eating lunch) are scattered throughout the park.

Hey, you know those Red Bull commercials where they show the people racing down a hill in crazy DIY carts and it looks like a ton of fun? Well that's happening in Manayunk this Saturday! It's called the Red Bull Soapbox Race. 40 teams of up to four members each craft zany human-powered driving machines and then race to the finish. The hill they'll be racing down in this case is the infamous Wall. But teams are not judged on speed alone: creativity and showmanship are also taken into consideration. Admission is free, and the race will happen rain or shine, so bring an umbrella, or plan to get wet. Pits open at 11AM with the first race starting at 1pm.

Ah, love. Though we may not have an overflow of the brotherly variety, Philly is offering plenty of options for those happy couples looking to sanctify said happiness with boxes of chocolates and a night on the town. We’ll tackle the latter here; we've given you some chocolate-related goodness already.

Ever been in one of those moods where every song sounds like a love song? That's the mood we're in and we're lucky because tonight Stars are playing at the Troc. And with Stars, every song is a love song, or at least a contemplation of love, be it the joyous happy side or the jealous underbelly. Touring in support of their latest release, In Our Bedroom After the War, the Canadians have taken their thoughtful pop sounds into a realm that could only be described as epic.

Broken Social Scene pals Metric will be in town tonight for a show at the First Unitarian Church. They're touring behind their excellent new album, Live It Out, and we're sure we'll hear some of the great cuts, like "Combat Baby," from their debut full-length, Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?
