  • Mayor Nutter must negotiate contracts for the city's four largest unions by June 30th when the current contracts expire. If not, it could lead to a strike according to Pete Matthews, president of AFSCME District Council 33.
  • Meteorologists warn that Tropical Storm Hanna could hit the Philadelphia region with high winds and pounding rain tomorrow night and Saturday.
  • Yesterday the City Council's Law and Government Committee approved legislation that would ask voters if they want to fold the Fairmount Park Commission into the city's Department of Recreation.
  • The Inquirer investigates the lasting effects of the shooting death of 33-year-old Moroccan-born Ouadii Souliman. He was gunned down at the door Al Aqsa Mosque on the border between Northern Liberties and Fishtown two Sundays ago as he awaited the dawn call to prayer; the apparent motive was robbery.
  • 23-year-old Chante Wright, as part of a deal to cut her boyfriend's jail sentence, agreed to testify in a murder case. It was a dangerous move, and her testimony was crucial, so "she became the first state witness in Philadelphia to enter the federal witness-protection program." She was given a new identity and moved to Florida. Unfortunately, she defied authorities and returned to Philadelphia to visit her gravely ill grandmother. She was killed early Saturday, only seven hours after coming back to the city.
