Poor Philly. We've been named the city with the most unattractive people, the fattest, and the most miserable. But, finally we've caught a break. Walkscore.com—an online tool to help people find great neighborhoods to live in—named Philadelphia the fifth most walkable city in the country. San Francisco was number one on the list, with New York and Boston coming in second and third, respectively. Although, one has to wonder how San Francisco is so walkable with all those hills. They’re definitely not easy on the knees.

Put down the Pabst, folks, Philly Beer Week has officially begun. Beer enthusiasts and general tipplers alike can treat their palates to city-wide specials on Philly's numerous local craft brews and imports.

Ghostly Women

We have a soft spot for things that are brilliantly stupid. These two sets of signs on the same block we recently stumbled upon in Chestnut Hill definitely qualify. As you can plainly see, there is an obvious conflict of parking instructions here.

The Inquirer takes a closer look at the Philadelphia policeman who was shot the day before the shooting of Chuck Cassidy, by a gunman who then fled and ultimately drowned in the Schuylkill. They also put the incident in the larger context of criminals in Philadelphia getting released from jail only to commit more crimes and be arrested again, over and over. Local shutterbug Dominic Mercier (whose work has appeared in our Photoist feature) has a new Philly photo project, and he needs volunteers. He's looking for folks from all walks of life to pose in local locales meaningful to them. All he asks is that you (a) live within the city limits (including NE Philly, Chestnut Hill, etc) and that you've been in Philly for at least one year. Mercier describes the series, dubbed the Philadelphia Portrait Project, as "as social experiment meets art project," and hopes that the long-term project will eventually lead to a show or collection. Which is all well and good for him (and for showcasing the city) but what' s in it for you? A 4 x 6 of your portrait. Not too shabby. You can see the first in the series here. Interested subjects can reach Dominic Mercier at mercier.dominic at gmail.com. This photo, which is not of Dominic (we just thought it was cute) is by Flickr user D'Arcy Norman

  • The state has filed a civil suit against a Chestnut Hill-based dating service called Great Expectations for lying to its customers - promising events that never happened and products that were never received. The service wasn't cheap either - members paid thousands of dollars. If you feel you were wronged by Great Expectations, call 1-800-441-2555. (Btw, we're amused that the owner of this service lives in this Phillyist's home town - Sewell, NJ.)
  • Yesterday was Unity Day in Philadelphia, the 28th occurrence of this yearly event celebrating families and community pride, featuring dozens of free musical performances. Unfortunately, Unity Day also means lots of road closings: MLK Drive, Kelly Drive around the art museum, and the Ben Franklin Parkway from Eakins Oval to 20th were all closed until 9PM. Hope you found your way to where you needed to go anyway...
  • - The tale of two friends who reunite and find that living their dreams isn’t as perfect as they’d thought it would be. Philadelphia premiere. September 28-October 15, Adrienne Theatre. For tickets and information, see The Flashpoint Theatre Company’s ticketing site.

We’re totally jazzed about the Live Arts and Fringe Festivals, but if we started listing PLAF shows, we’d never get the rest of these listings to ya’ll. Check out the festival page (below) for more info – but don’t forget about all of the other theatrical happenings in the Greater Philadelphia area!
