  • A scholarship program that has provided cash to nearly 13,000 Philadelphia high school students headed for college is coming to a sudden end. U.S. Rep. Chaka Fattah told Mayor Nutter in a letter last week that he was disbanding the program, in part because of the mayor’s decision last month to cut the city’s annual contribution this year by $1 million. “Regretfully, the budget realities for the City of Philadelphia make it impossible to continue this effort,” Fattah wrote.

  • Police were investigating two homicides and at least two shootings in the city over the weekend.
  • We're sure you've heard by now, but as we haven't had a chance to mention it here yet: on Monday, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court decided that "City Council's longstanding failure to vote on SugarHouse's zoning and land-use requests" constituted "deliberate inaction" and therefore "cleared the way for construction to begin on the $550 million SugarHouse casino in Fishtown and Northern Liberties." SugarHouse officials say they expect to start construction in a matter of weeks. The...

  • The FBI is looking for a filthy dude in connection with the robbery yesterday of the Trumark Financial Credit Union at 1811 John F. Kennedy Blvd. He's a black man in his 30s "who was wearing sunglasses, a dirty gray suit jacket and dirty white sneakers." He got away with some cash - and a dye pack, which was later found exploded at a train concourse at 17th and JFK.

  • Commonwealth Court upheld Philly's much discussed limits on campaign contributions on Monday, but Chaka Fattah said he would appeal the ruling, which would bring the issue to the state Supreme Court.
  • Bad news: the postage price for first class mail is going up to 41 cents as of May 14th. Good news: on the same day, the post office is going to start putting out stamps marked with "Forever" instead of a price, which means they'll be good to use no matter how much the price rises in the future. (Although you still have to pay whatever the current price is when you buy it.) And what will adorn the first of these stamps, you ask? Why, it'll be Philly's very own Liberty Bell! Nice.
  • We're sad to report that Milton Street is no longer running for mayor, but happy to report that he is running for City Council-at-large—against his own nephew! Which means a lot of relatives of mayors and former mayors will be on the May 15 ballot (May 15 being, as the Daily News helpfully points out, the day after Milton is scheduled to stand trial on federal corruption charges). Besides Milton and his nephew Sharif, there'll be W. Wilson Goode, the son of former Mayor Wilson Goode, and Bill Green, the son of former Mayor William Green.

  • Hey, what about that other Philly politician with legal troubles, Vince Fumo? The Daily News has rounded up some handy strategies that he might use to beat the rap. Oh, and in case you're having trouble keeping up, here's a cheat sheet listing all of the charges against Fumo and the possible penalties he might face.
  • Wanted: Candidate for mayor.

  • A couple of crazy bastards parachuted down off the Comcast Center Sunday morning. Of course, as is requisite these days when you do something stupid and dangerous, a video was taken and promptly posted on YouTube (although sadly, it has since been taken down). Police are looking for the guys, whom they plan to charge with "criminal trespassing, reckless endangerment and risking a catastrophe."
  • Now it's coming out that Reid's sons have gotten into traffic accidents before and there have been few legal consequences. Are they being shown favoritism?

  • The organizers were apparently trying to keep it quiet, but news leaked that the Union League of Philadelphia was honoring Donald Rumsfeld with its Gold Medal Friday night, and protesters were there to greet attendants with angry words. In fact, it sounds like a lot of people are pretty outraged that Rummy got the award, and oddly enough the Union League refuses to explain why he was chosen to receive it.

Chaka Fattah announcing he is running for mayor of Philadelphia, his wife, NBC 10 anchor Renee Chenault-Fattah, will remain at the anchor desk, despite a blatantly obvious conflict of interest. Mayoral hopeful and current U.S. Rep. Chaka Fattah brokered the deal. Chavez, President of Venezuela, recently called President George W. Bush a "genocidal madman".
    • In a really stupid move, Pennsylvania lawmakers are mulling over the idea of taxing gym memberships. Granted, Men's Fitness magazine says we've improved since last year - we're the 25th fattest city in America instead of the second fattest city in the U.S. - but we're fairly certain it's not the best idea ever had to penalize people for trying to be healthy. The legislation being considered would also levy a tax on advertising services, campground fees, laundry services, candy, tanning, management consulting, and concert tickets. Yeah, because the Ticketmaster fees don't already make going to a concert annoyingly expensive.
    • In sort of related news, people all over town are abuzz with the gossip that 12th Street Gym owner Robert Guzzardi is a big contributor to Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum. 12th Street Gym is smack dab in the middle of the Gayborhood and heavily utilized by the Philadelphia gay community. Santorum is not exactly a friend to the LGBT community.
