Every weekday of December (except for December 25, that is), Phillyist will be counting down to 2008 with our highlights from the past year and our predictions for the next. If you have a list you'd like to submit, let us know!

Dear Philadelphia:

The best of the internet, chopped into tiny bits and grilled for your enjoyment. Who knew there was an annual symposium for cocktail robotics? Apparently it's called Roboexotica, it's been around for nine years, it just happened again weekend before last, and Wired has the photos. (Via Jill) This past weekend an auction of items formerly belonging to Ozzy Osbourne and his family raked in a lot of cash, with all the proceeds going to...

The shapeless dough of the internet, formed into tasty pellets and baked to perfection, just for you.

Protest over national vs. regional chains, the never-ending debate over the place of cars and bicycles in our metropolises, professional sports scandals, remembering a solemn day, and being issued a search warrant - it all happened across our sites this week!

  • Earlier this spring, when the whole thing came out about the Philadelphia School District's budget problems, their chief financial officer and budget overseer resigned. But it's just now coming out that, despite the fact that she only worked for the district for two years, she left with a ridiculously good deal: she was paid for unused vacation time, will keep her benefits for a full year, and will be paid at full salary for an extra nine months. Sounds like the deal was put together by departing School Reform Commission Chairman James Nevels and was not approved by the full commission.
  • Mike Birbiglia is, and how you should totally go see his show this week? We wouldn't tell you to do something we wouldn't do ourselves. (Well, that's a lie. We often tell people to do things we wouldn't, simply because the outcome is pretty funny. Example: Go try to eat ten saltines in under a minute with no water. We'll be waiting.)

We at the Gothamist network would like to express our heartfelt wishes to the people of Minnesota in the days after their tragic bridge collapse. We're not trying to discount the severity of the accident by making note of it in opposition to our usual -Ist lightheartedness – we just wanted to take a moment and recognize those affected last week.

...Wow: Just watch the video embedded here and marvel at the intelligence of the interviewer. (Via The Superficial.)

On July 17th, Michael Vick (among others) was indicted on myriad charges, including illegal dog fighting. You also shouldn't forget his weak attempt to "smuggle" a bong through airport security in January – a charge which was dropped because all tests on the confiscated substances came back negative. You'll also remember that in 2005, Vick was sued by a woman alleging that he passed herpes onto her while using the alias "Ron Mexico."

...Lindsay Lohan: Last week, we swore we'd never trust Lindsay Lohan again. Here's why: Lohan was booked last week after a Memorial Day drunken-driving incident, but released almost immediately on bail. Only a few days later, and not long after being released from rehab, she was arrested again for DUI and cocaine possession. (Mugshot here.) How was she caught? Oh, by chasing her newly-former personal assistant's mother. Surprise, surprise: Lindsay is professing her innocence, so she's checked back into rehab, probably to try to stem a potential six-year sentence. Needless to say, producers of Lindsay's current projects are not happy – at all.

  • During heavy rains (like we're getting now), sewer lines in Philly sometimes get overwhelmed and back up, flooding some residents' basements with some pretty nasty stuff.

I don't know nearly as much about poker as I thought I did. Apparently, watching the occasional episode of one hand might beat another instead of paying attention to the plot.

The best of the internet, squirted out in flavorful neon globules, just for you.

...Exits: After all the guff with The Don, we're not exactly surprised. (Via .)

With all that went down this week, we thought we'd cheer everyone up by giving everyone a double dose of dogs.

Forget Ben Franklin: the greatest inventor in the area was the Dutch gal who first looked at the bottom of a pot just used to make liverwurst and thought, there has to be something more here. And so was born scrapple, the breakfast delight of Phillyites everywhere (though we've heard they look at you funny in California), including Big Ben himself.
