Curiosity Killed The Cat!

South Philadelphia is a unique collection of narrow streets, old-world traditions and curse words. Hidden amongst the proud blue-collar glaze of cheese-whiz and Catholicism lies a number of fascinating mysteries, mysteries that have never penetrated the protective border of Washington Avenue.

The shapeless dough of the internet, formed into tasty pellets and baked to perfection, just for you. You know what your cat needs? A wig! Ah, the internet and its fascination with doing strange and terrible things to cats... (Via) Dude, a dinosaur mummy. Scientists have found the remains of a hadrosaur that have been mummified by a natural fluke of time and chemistry. It's one of only five dinosaurs to be found in this...

Fun around town, for $10 or less:

The Inquirer has an article about the Philadelphia Community Cats Council, a group of folks trying to manage and reduce the city's huge feral cat population, estimated to be at least 250,000. They do this by trapping feral cats, neutering them, and then returning them where they were found. Both the Daily News and the Inquirer have articles about Sharon Hill native John Patrick Foley and his elevation this weekend to the status of Cardinal...

Let's get all the holiday news out of the way first: the Inquirer has coverage of the 88th annual Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day Parade, which mainly focuses on the great weather. They greet Black Friday by reminding us of the many toy recalls, and by pointing out that there could be lots of great deals to be had out there due to a yearlong sales slump and tons of extra inventory. Now that the Mayoral...

We already mentioned in an earlier post that the unconventional Bob Dylan biopic I'm Not There gets released today. Although the soundtrack of the film has been out for some time, we thought we'd take this opportunity to review it - especially seeing as how it's a review copy of the album that we've been listening to and all. We're not just late on the review because we're lazy, though. There's a lot of music...

We kind of love the Edgar Allan Poe House on 7th and Spring Garden, where the writer lived from 1838-1844. We love it because some of our favorite pieces of his work, including , were published while he lived there. We love it because it means we can claim Poe as a native son. And we love it for being completely empty. (So! Creepy!)

A Quirky Column about Dog Walking Adventures in the City of Dog-Owning Love

There's so much going on across the Ist-a-Verse that it's almost impossible to keep track these days. Fortunately, we do it so you don't have to!

Despite recent accidental retirement rumors, Brit pop artist Patrick Wolf is very much still making music and very much opening for Amy Winehouse at the Electric Factory tonight.

Filled with sentimental and emotional ballads, Mindy Smith's recent Philly show never seemed to get off the ground. Kicking her show off with "Out Loud," her new single off her second album, Long Island Shores, she seemed to be excited and energized. But with each subsequent song, the energy lessened, an awkwardness grew between Smith and the audience and her songs fell flat. After hearing the final song, "Come to Jesus," we finally realized...

By his own admission, Michael Penn isn’t a song-and-dance man. (His stage presence is, one might say, subdued.) Twiddling his strings at his Friday night show at World Café, he confessed “I’m a chronic tuner with no gift of gab,” and encouraged showgoers to grab the audience mic between song breaks to offer up “a really good joke, a fun fact, even a well placed heckle!”

This morning, the first thing we thought to ourselves upon waking up was, “Fucker’s twat.”

Apparently we're coming to the party a bit late on this, but did you know that Center City Philly is home to the latest YouTube star? Her name is Nora, and she's a cat who plays the piano! And by "plays the piano," we mean she likes hitting a few of the keys with her paws. After watching the video, we're really kind of confused as to why some have cried "hoax" or "cat nip." It's cute and all, but it's not like she's playing concertos here or anything. It seems perfectly plausible to us that a cat would come to like hitting a few keys over and over again. Anyways, check out the video below, then, if you haven't had enough, read the Inquirer article, and watch the NBC10 report. You can also find a possible scientific explanation for the cat's behavior here.

Every so often I might wander over to CNN. But just to glance the top headlines. To catch up if I've been out of touch - I don't own a TV. Mostly though, even that duty has been relegated to MSN and even, the BBC.
