Extra, Extra

We know it's Labor Day weekend and all, but man, there's some bad juju going around the Philadelphia area today. Our Asshole of the Week was just the tip of the iceberg.

When Phillyist decided to cover the Warped Tour, we knew we had a lot to look forward to. We're happy to say that we weren't disappointed. There was a little something for everyone in terms of both music and vendors, both of which were on full display on that sunny day in Camden. We were happy to find the weather cooperating, save for a few light sprinkles that seemed to refresh concertgoers and all in all everyone acted cool, which is always appreciated. Overall we couldn't complain. Oh, except when it came to the $4 bottles of water. That sucked a lot, as did the fact that if you wanted a lineup of the bands to carry with you, that would be $2. And if you wanted a beer, well forget about it unless you had $9(!!!) to pony up. Oh well...on to the rock!

Yo, Philly in the News

In today's "all crime-related" edition...

  • Gary Kao, the radiation oncologist responsible for nearly 100 prostate cancer patients at the VA Hospital receiving excessive or insuufficient doses of radiation, has taken leave from Penn's med school.
  • A man was charged today in the June 14th shooting of a city police officer.
  • Fox News Philadelphia aired a disgusting segment on an army of cockroaches overtaking a block in Camden.

Jim just let us know, via Facebook, that PATCO is currently running shuttle busses on part of the Speedline route. The wait, from his TwitPic account, looks pretty unpleasant, so if you have another means of getting home—or if you want to hang out in the city and have a few drinks before you head back—we'd suggest you not hurry out of Philadelphia just this second.

  • Sunday was another sad day for the Eagles, as they lost to the Baltimore Ravens 36 to 7. In fact, Donovan McNabb was benched for the first time ever after a first half in which he completed only eight of 18 passes for 59 yards and was intercepted twice.
  • Speaking of gambling, the Borgata yesterday ejected a smelly poker player from the casino after receiving complaints from other players. The 440-pound man had been playing for 17 straight hours, and now he wants an apology.
  • Fun around town, for $10 or less:

  • A 50-year-old Phoenixville man tried to break into a Chester Township general-contracting company off I-95 over the weekend, possibly to steal scrap metal. We know this because he was found yesterday morning hanging by his neck from the garage window. He had apparently stood on a sawhorse and poked his head through the window looking for a latch when he slipped and snapped his neck.
  • The Inquirer examines what it meant (for the players and their families) for a team from Camden's Cramer Hill neighborhood to play T-ball on the White House lawn yesterday.
  • How has the Delaware River Valley changed in the last fifty years?

  • Senator Barack Obama will be at the National Constitution Center this morning to give "a major address on race, politics and unifying our country." However, even though the speech is about unifying, the event will not be open to the public. Luckily for us, Inquirer reporter Larry Eichel will be blogging from the event. The speech is apparently an attempt to work some emergency repairs in the wake of some controversial statements by Obama's pastor. Not to be outdone, Hillary Clinton will have an appearance in Philly today, too, also not open to the public. The event will be at City Hall and is described as "leading voices for bringing our troops home."
  • Three attacks on young girls have been reported in Camden since October, and police suspect they may be connected. They're on the look-out for a predator, and are warning parents to pay close attention to their children.
  • Even though we kinda just bitched you out for not going to smaller venues and supporting smaller artists, we would love it if you joined us tonight over the bridge at Camden's large outdoor venue, The Tweeter Center. Yes, we're sure there will be a lot of emo and punk kids there but for whatever it's worth, it's going to be an experience and hopefully a fun one. The 2007 Honda Civic Tour features five...
