No World Series game tonight, folks, which means that you can head out to see what's actually going on in the Philadelphia area—as long as you aren't relying on SEPTA to get you there.

The Opera Company of Philadelphia finishes its run of Verdi's timeless and tragic Rigoletto.
The Philadelphia Art Alliance's New Music Mondays series presents works by Jan Krzywicki, Professor of Composition at Temple University.
We always get a little sad when the main classical music season ends and all the musicians go to their fun summer festivals. But, this can only mean that the Mann Center's season is just around the corner!
Time to gear up, people: the 16th Philadelphia Film Festival starts tomorrow! As we did last year, Phillyist is planning plenty of coverage, mostly taking the form of film festival diary entries from various staff members (including, of course, yours truly, whose schedule can be seen here, in case you're interested). But what's going on this year, and what should you look forward to? Well, we're glad you asked. Let's pick through the overview press release, shall we?
Wow! Did this creep up on anybody else? We were thinking this was still a ways off, and then all of the sudden the website is live, the schedule is up, and tickets go on sale TODAY (although as of this writing, the links for purchasing don't seem to be live yet online)! (UPDATE: Online ticketing now appears to be up and running.) We haven't had a chance to look over this year's list of movies in detail, but a quick glance at program titles like "Asian Gangsters" and "A Salute to Disney Animation" has already gotten us pretty excited. If, like us, you could use some help getting a handle on what's showing this year and what are the best things to see, you might want to check out one of the Evening with the Curators events. We're embarrassed to say we missed the first one of these this year last night, where the program was unveiled and information on advanced ticket sales was given out. But we're sure future installments with the curators will be plenty informative and fun, too. You can get an idea of what to expect at the event from our coverage of last year's. It's the inside scoop on how the festival was programmed, which of the films are the curators' favorites, and how you should go about scheduling and viewing the films. This year we are also promised film clips! Sweet.
The Bryn Mawr Film Institute will screen Scene Not Heard: Women in Philadelphia Hip-Hop this Wednesday night at 7:30. A documentary brought to life by Maori Karmael Holmes of Black Lily fame, the film examines the unique place of women in the local hip-hop scene and the special challenges they face in a culture that doesn't always appreciate a strong female voice. The "cast" includes favorites Floetry, Bahamadia, and Lady B; there's also some rare performance footage; and we hear Michele Byrd-McPhee of Montäzh (a group of whom Phillyist is very fond--first date with the husband doncha know) drops some insight as well. Ursula Rucker's even in there; the thing's chock full of delightfulness!

Are you as excited about the upcoming 15th Philadelphia Film Festival as Phillyist is?! We don't really see how you could be, but okay. Anyway, if you just can't wait to know this year's line-up (we mean besides the Danger After Dark program; you already know that, thanks to us), and/or you're desperate to know more about how the films were selected and which of them are going to be really good, you should show up at one of the three Evening with the Curators events this month, where the festival programmers will be talking about all that and more! Attending will be Associate Program Director and Danger After Dark Curator Travis Crawford (pictured), as well as Documentaries head honcho Jennifer Steinberg, Scott Johnston from the Citypaper Festival of Independents, and Festival Media Director Andrew Preis. There'll even be a question and answer portion, so if you've ever wondered anything about the festival or about this year's films, now's your chance! Personally, Phillyist plans on bugging Travis big time by asking him why the hell there's no Takashi Miike film in Danger After Dark this year.
Oh, Neil Stein, how the mighty have fallen. Neil Stein, former Philly restaurant tycoon, will be sentenced today following his guilty plea last Summer on filing false tax returns. The government is expected to request a sentence of 18-24 months in the pokey - Stein lucked out: the max is nine years. No word on the future of Stein's sole restaurant, Rouge.
; now, along with Don Hertzfeldt, he's presenting The Animation Show; a collection of animated short films from all over the world. The Animation Show has 3 stops in the Philadelphia area this week: Wednesday in Bryn Mawr, Thrusday in Ambler, and tonight in Doylestown.
