We miss Mum Puppettheatre terribly, so we're thrilled that puppetry is still alive and well in Philadelphia.

In response to the shootings on the Virginia Tech Campus and the escalating violence on Philadelphia streets, Broad Street Ministries will hold an ecumenical candlelight vigil service tonight at 7 p.m.

Usually when we hear about a noted evangelical Christian author speaking about gays and the Church, we expect it to be something pretty exclusionary and hateful. But Professor Jack Rogers, former Moderator of the Presbyterian Church USA, is giving a lecture tonight (with a question and answer period afterwards) on the subject of gay rights, and it sounds like it might actually be pretty reasonable, open-minded, and, well...Christian. His latest book is called Jesus, the Bible, and Homosexuality: Explode the Myths, Heal the Church, and in it he talks about the personal change of heart he had on this issue. Also, according to the press release, "He examines how the church misused the Bible to justify slavery and the denial of rights to women, and he links these efforts to efforts today to use biblical texts to deny equal rights to gays and lesbians." Wow! Should be an interesting talk. And it's free!

If you know only one scene from Don Quixote, it's the one in which the titular knight goes jousting against windmills, under the mistaken impression that they are giants. It's this scene, and its themes of imagination, fantasy, whimsy, and transformation, that is being referred to by "Tilting at Giants," a new art exhibit and installation opening tonight at Broad Street Ministry. From the press release:

The installation features twelve full-size windmills suspended 20 feet above the pews inside the Broad Street Ministry's 106-year-old gothic sanctuary.
This sounds like a really cool and unique art installation, and Phillyist is looking forward to checking it out. And we'll try to resist the urge to poke the windmills with sticks.
