Eagles Schedule Announced

It's the middle of April and all this rain is making us think Spring is still eight weeks away (thanks, Phil). But, it's not. Spring is here. And while Fall is actually still months away, grab your cheeseballs, 'cause the party is about to start.

Philadelphia Eagles Rejected Your Friend Request

This is a strange story with many different implications, not the least of which is simple. It’s a situation in which nobody seems to be right. We’ll do our best to wade through this murky situation.

Yo, Philly in the News

  • A pick-up truck smashed into the front of a house in Rhawnhurst at 2:30 a.m. this morning. As the truck was speeding away, the Shehata family was left to see rubble all over their living room. "I thought it was an airplane, and all of a sudden I found the front of the house all the way inside," said the father, Rizk, a dentist.

You're all probably familiar with Miss Bee by now. She's a frequent commenter on Phillyist who heard our call for new writers and was quick to answer it, so we couldn't help but upgrade her posting privileges. Born in Philadelphia, Miss Bee has lived here most of her life, with a few quick hiatuses that we forgive her for. She likes Butterscotch Krimpets, is baffled by SEPTA behavior, and will be trying out for the Eagles Cheerleading squad for the sole purpose of "moral support" for a friend. Welcome, Jen!

    Passing The Happy Point

“The Eagles probably won't win the Super Bowl, but there's no reason not to get pumped for the possibility and gather with friends and hot wings to cheer them on this Sunday.”

Philadelphia and Tampa Bay have unfinished business. Not in the, “I left some TPS Reports to finish on Monday,” kind of way. No. Philly and Tampa have Beatrix Kiddo and Bill kind of unfinished business.

This Sunday starts another fantastic NFL season. (Yesterday's slop-fest doesn't count as the start of the season.) And Bird, Bird, Bird, Bird is the word. Or Birds, as it is.

I like this Top (Insert Your Number) thing that Phillyist has going right now. It allows you to write without a clear beginning-to-end narrative, something that comes in handy when you aren’t really watching the game that you are supposed to be “reporting” on. This week, I didn't have something as deathly important as getting my dog's photo taken with Jolly St. Nick. No, I blew the game off because my wife was having her family over for dinner. Now I like the in-laws, but, more importantly, I really like TACOS. The wife made some really delicious ones and I wasn’t going to let some game with “playoff” implications get in the way of my “Should I have beef or pork tacos” dilemma. It just really wouldn’t be fair to the family. That and the fact that I've officially graduated to the "don't really give an ass" mode of this season. But since I’m not going to let the fact that I didn’t really watch the game get in the way of a deadline, let’s start the fun and cheeriness!

There are several questions that will rattle around in our heads for a while, tormenting us while seeing highlights of the remainder of the playoffs, particularly while at whatever dispirited Super Bowl party we attend, telling ourselves it's about being with friends instead of "the game." The 2.5 million dollar commercials will be funny at times, there’ll be lots of beer, some disgusting nacho dip that defies ocular sense by tasting good, and maybe it’ll actually be a good game, though we think a rematch of Super Bowl XX would only see a boring landslide victory in favor of the Pats. Yes, Brady versus Manning - with the Colts revamped D - will be the real Super Bowl.

Game Time: Saturday, January 13th at 8pm

The Eagles have come a long way. After being left for dead in late November - they lost McNabb in a 31-13 loss to the Titans, which was followed by a 45-21 loss to the Colts - they reeled off five straight wins with a quarterback that all the NFL considered a washout after showing some ability in San Francisco. The super undead Eagles - coach Reid himself, as well as several players, was using the zombie comparison in the last two weeks - go charging into the playoffs as the hottest team in the NFL, akin to a fully restored and fully revved hot-rod that's been unleashed on the streets after years lying under a tarp.

Though I expected the Eagles to win, all the imbibed Sam Adams Winter Brews, along with the frenzied conversation shared with my relatives, made the game play out like a dream, as they ran away with the game in the second half. Literally. The Eagles 204 yds rushing was three more than the Cowboys total offensive output. They ended the day with 426 yds of total offensive. But what was most impressive was how they were able to control the clock during long sustained drives: they ended the game with 37:06 minutes of possession compared to 22:54 for the Cowboys. On their opening drive Garcia overcame the momentary loss of L.J. Smith (Smith would return in the 3rd with a 65yd completion that helped set up a field goal) by connecting with his backup, Matt Scobel, for a 25 yard touchdown pass after a 13 play 89 yard drive that ate up seven minutes and twelve seconds from the clock. After exchanging possession via a fumble on the ensuing kickoff followed by a Jeff Garcia interception (Madden proved once again that he doesn't know what he's talking about as he said: "This is what Garcia does a lot of," as Garcia has thrown only two INTs in five games in addition to recently have a stint where he threw the most passes of his career without an INT), the Eagles defense shutdown the Cowboys on the goalline in dramatic fashion. Garcia took them right back down the field with another 89-yard drive (12-yards, 7:30) that resulted in a David Akers field goal to put the Birds up by 10.

    Merry Christmas to All,
