Playlist Rewind: Stevie Wonder

When I previewed Stevie Wonder's upcoming performance at the Borgata, I was excited to say the very least. The event center at Borgata is large enough to hold the crowds that an artist like Stevie can draw, but it still feels intimate. My husband and I had fantastic seats and while we waited for the show to start we passed the time people-watching, which was a treat as everyone seemed to really dress up for this show. Maybe it was being at the Borgata or maybe it was the thrill of seeing Stevie Wonder in person but we felt under dressed—me in a black dress and heels and him in a suit, that's for sure. The Borgata, by the way, is one of our favorite places to catch a show when we we're down the shore. They always treat people well, especially Phillyist people, and although it's still a casino with casino-like pricing at some of their restaurants, we had no problem heading to Metropolitan and totally annihilating one of the greatest grilled cheese sandwiches we've ever had in our lives. Dinner for two (including a glass of wine apiece) was under $50.00.

Phillyist Playlist: Stevie Wonder at The Borgata

Sitting here thinking of what to write for this preview, there are a million things to say and all are completely inadequate words to use. To say Stevie Wonder has been a personal influence is one thing, but to know that he has influenced the greatest modern musicians of our time is so far-reaching and amazing that it almost defies superlatives. This Phillyist danced her first dance with her husband to Stevie's "You and I" and with her father to "Isn't She Lovely." Stevie Wonder has been a part of people's lives since the early 1960s and continues to perform with the same enthusiasm and infectious optimism since then. His new DVD, Live At Last showcases perfectly the versatility, both vocally and instrumentally, of this musical genius. You can catch Stevie performing his Wonder Autumn's Night tour when it stops for two days at The Borgata this Friday and Saturday.

Yo, Philly in the News

  • Your daily dose of shootings.
  •

We went into the Saturday Night Rebel Rockers show at the Borgata a couple weeks ago—we know, this is long overdue—with a little bit of trepidation. After all, we were really going primarily, if not exclusively, because we're big Counting Crows (MySpace) fans. We were less than familiar with Michael Franti & Spearhead (MySpace), and the one time this Phillyist saw Augustana (MySpace), I was a little...underwhelmed. All told, we thought we'd really rather have just seen a Counting Crows headlining show, but we figured we'd take what we could get—a mishmash of the three bands playing together, swapping members, each individual band (in no particular order) playing its own songs at times. There had been some good buzz on this uniquely-formatted tour, so maybe it was our curiosity getting the best of us, but we weren't really prepared to love the show.

    Chelsea Handler at the Borgata

Comedian and late-night talk-show host extraordinaire Chelsea Handler will be appearing this weekend at the Borgata Atlantic City in what will surely be a series of raucous and racy stand-up comedy shows. The author of My Horizontal Life: A Collection of One-Night Stands and Are You There, Vodka? It's Me Chelsea is performing in a trio of sold-out shows. Hope to see you there, and be sure to check Phillyist for a recap next week.

Phillyist Playlist: Counting Crows at the Borgata

About a year ago—the last time we saw Counting Crows (MySpace)—we lamented the too-short sets Counting Crows play on their frequent co-headlining tours. (Last summer was with Maroon 5, but this Phillyist has also seen them on double-bills with Live and The Goo Goo Dolls.) The band has too much strong material, and they're too excellent of performers, to play only for a little over an hour.

Daniel Tosh: Check Your Soul at the Door

It takes a special kind of person to enjoy Daniel Tosh's comedy. In order to get the full experience at one of his shows, you almost have sign a mental waiver from the start, saying, "I believe it's OK to make jokes about pretty much anything, including but certainly not limited to: religion, sex, racism, country music, the Special Olympics, clowns, the Dave Matthews Band, etc., just as long as you make it completely hilarious."

  • The leaders of a multimillion-dollar illegal sports-betting ring that operated from the high-stakes poker lounge in one of Atlantic City’s biggest casinos have pleaded guilty to related loan-sharking and money-laundering charges. The pleas from Jack Buscemi Jr., of Mullica Hill, and Andrew Micali, of Ventnor, were announced yesterday after months of intense negotiations between defense attorneys and state prosecutors. Buscemi and Micali were charged with directing a betting ring out of the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa that took in more than $60 million over 20 months. They were arrested in November 2007.
  • Speaking of gambling, the Borgata yesterday ejected a smelly poker player from the casino after receiving complaints from other players. The 440-pound man had been playing for 17 straight hours, and now he wants an apology.
  • Screen tees, message tees, whatever you want to call them - you either love 'em or hate 'em. The shore is no better place to stock up on some of your favorite t-shirts, or poke fun of the ones you'd never be caught dead in. Wildwood is especially famous for having its fair share of ridiculous t-shirts. Save Britney, O so Textual, and Pale is the New Tan, are just some of the ones you'll see this year. And, it appears that some of the new t-shirts are even taking a political stance, according to this article from the Inquirer. Go make a fashion statement, and have a great weekend down the shore.

This is the first in a series of articles featuring events happening “down the shore” this summer. From Atlantic City to Cape May, Phillyist helps keep you in the know.
