Asshole of the Week

This Phillyist would like to know who thinks feeding children is bad. Who, precisely, would look at a group of kids coming to school without lunch, and believe that it is okay for them to remain hungry?

  • A federal appeals court decision yesterday threw out Mumia Abu-Jamal's death sentence for killing Daniel Faulkner and ruled that Abu-Jamal must be sentenced to life in prison or get a chance with a new Philadelphia jury that would decide only whether he should get life or be sentenced to death again.
  • seemed to enjoy the salt that came with them. For food, it looked like he ordered the tortilla soup and stuffed shrimp to start, and then the waitress told us that he'd ordered the Enchiladas del Mar. There, let it never be said that we never post anything newsworthy.

Like most of you, I'm sure, Phillyist has been gratified to see Sen. Rick Santorum make the long, occasionally hilarious journey to the private sector. Bob Casey has led in the polls since the race began, the national GOP is already planning on a loss in Pennsylvania, and Santorum himself is pinning his last hopes on the critical WWE Smackdown contingent. Meanwhile, when the GM told Lynn Swann to make a Political Aptitude check, the dude didn't exactly roll a natural twenty.

  • Bad news, folks: PGW will be raising its rates again. The only positive thing is that it sounds like it probably won't go through until some time next year.
  • Oh, no! Rolling Rock won't be brewed in Latrobe, PA anymore! Thankfully, it's not going away for good (you can make fun of us - many have - but we like a Rolling Rock now and then), and it's not moving far; Rolling Rock was sold to Anheuser-Busch in May, and they plan to keep brewing the beer in Newark, New Jersey. Other info of interest in this story: apparently nobody is sure what the "33" below the pledge of quality on the bottle means, but some interesting theories are offered.
  • - The democratic primary elections were yesterday, and it looks like Bob Casey will be facing Rick Santorum in the upcoming Senate race. You can find more results here.

    • 13-year-old Naiym Muhammed is being charged as an adult in the Sunday fire in Germantown that killed a 17-year-old girl and critically injured her mother. The charges against Muhammed include murder, arson, conspiracy. More charges are expected. Police say the fire was set in retribution over a small debt.
    • Some local Dems are finding it a little harder to support Bob Casey, Jr. in the up-coming primary. Both Casey and PA Governor Ed Rendell announced their support for Samuel Alito for the Supreme Court. Many are concerned about how a woman's right to choose her own medical care might be affected should Alito's nomination be approved by the full Senate. PA Senator Arlen Specter, a self-proclaimed pro-choice Republican, voted to approve Alito's nomination during judiciary commitee hearings.
    • Apparently, the general public may simply be too stupid to understand the difference between "Ben Station" and "Penn Station". We're told tourism officials in Philly are wary of renaming 30th Street to honor Ben Franklin because there might be some confusion. From what we hear, there's already confusion, so what's the difference? It really doesn't matter, because the Pew Charitable Trusts has decided not to pursue the name change.

Things are getting interesting in mid-term election news. Concerned that moderate Republicans have no options in the choice for Senator, a dark horse has emerged to challenge Senator Rick Santorum in the primary election.

Junior Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum is looking at quite a fight in next year's mid-term election. He's currently trailing likely Democratic opponent Bob Casey, Jr. (son of much-beloved, longtime PA governor, Bob Casey) by nearly 14 points in a Quinnipiac University poll. Possibly defrauding the Penn Hills school district, Santorum's incredibly unpopular opinions about the right to privacy and the right of government to make our medical decisions for us, his public declaration of support for full Amtrak funding which he promptly voted against, and that time Santorum blamed the liberals for causing Catholic priests to diddle little kids...well, none of that helps him. However, pollsters indicate that Santorum's flagging support is "because Santorum is too aligned with some of the White House's flailing policies." Enter the new, softer side of Rick Santorum. It began in March with a poll that showed Catholics were increasingly becoming anti-death penalty. Santorum immediately backtracked on his own hardcore support of the death penalty. And now Santorum has begun a campaign in earnest to prove to Pennsylvanians -- indeed, the whole country -- that he really isn't a hypocritical liar bent on allowing government to butt into every aspect of our lives. Instead, he's a lover of animals and children and veterans, concerned about the fiscal well-being of all Pennsylvanians, even at the risk of alienating his bosom buddy, President George W. Bush.
    • Despite voting against every single attempt to add money to the Veterans Administration fund to pay for healthcare (Democrats had been fighting for more funding since Spring), Santorum all of a sudden became the chief backer of additional funding for the VA. See, he really does support the troops! Now maybe he can get them some body armor.
    • On Tuesday Santorum introduced a bill to eliminate the telephone excise tax, that 3% tax added onto your phone bill. 3%! Why, that's a whole $1 or $2 per month! That savings would have been severely offset, however, if Santorum's minimum wage bill had been approved.
    • Santorum has now decided to appeal to our love of animals by taking on the puppy mills. We guess this goes hand in hand with his new found respect for life for those in prison.
