  • We're starting to lose track of who stands where on the whole casino issue. Last we checked, Michael was pretty firmly against it. But this week, a Michael aide speaking to a group of pro-casino Fishtown residents (yes, apparently, contrary to what most of the local media would have you believe, there are pro-casino residents out there) said that Michael was moving cautiously forward on the project.
  • Our first Asshole(s) of the Week are the Michael-Vick-wanna-be douchebags who beat, stoned and hanged a pit bull from a railing at an abandoned school in North Philadelphia. It's fitting that Vick was the lead in Bill Maher's aforementioned writeup and these scumbags are our first Phillyist Assholes of the Week. We're going to give honorary Asshole of the Week awards to everyone like the wastes of life responsible for this latest animal brutality incident, because it's not like this is an uncommon occurrence. There were also two live pit bull puppies found dumped in a duffel bag elsewhere in North Philly. We fully believe in Mahatma Gandhi's observation that "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated," and Charles Doran's logical follow-up that "A man's soul can be judged by the way he treats his dog." We hesitate to call animal cruelists (yes, we made up the word, but we like it) "men" at all. Instead, we'll call them Assholes of the Week.

I'm a music guy. I listen to a ton of music, and because of Phillyist, I've been able to hear a lot of great stuff I never would have heard otherwise. But, no matter how much of a music fan you are, there are always some great albums that slip through the cracks and you don't manage to hear, even though you really should. So here are ten albums from 2007 I really should have heard by now, but for some reason haven't. Some are on this list because of critical buzz, while others are based on my own thoughts about the artists. And I pose the question to you, dear readers: Which two or three of these albums should I use my lovely Amazon gift card to buy?

Remember last month, when some math whiz at Carnegie Mellon decided that Phillyist was the 47th-most important blog... in the universe? Well, the staff of Phillyist got to thinking that we had you to thank for that, so we wanted to buy you all a drink. And then, we got to thinking that 47 is only five away from the meaning of life, and we decided that not only did we want to buy...

While Editor Jill has been out covering PLAF events and neglecting her regular posts, we've found that some of you have really missed "Monday Manners." With one PLAF diary left for Jill to write, it looked like Phillyist would once again be mannerless this week, until good ol' Bill Hayes stepped in and asked if he could write a post about something Jill's not qualified to cover anyhow. Please enjoy this column – Jill will be back next week!
